If your hamster is fine with that, of course, yes, watch away
What I mean is, when you first get your hamster, some hamsters might hide from you in their hides if they hear any sounds etc, but other hamsters will stay out in the open and you can watch what they are up to.

Re: hey
Yes. I watch mine, although its mainly just watching his cage and hearing rustling noises. I talk to him to get him used to the sound of my voice.

Re: hey
His fave things are the 9" wheel and the paper towel roll that I gave to him as a burrow starter, I have two cats, and he seems unfazed that they are even there. I gave him two bendy bridges and he likes to chew on them. Which makes me happy that he is using it !!
He wakes up around 6 ish and goes to sleep around 7ish (eastern time) so I watch him at night before I go to bed, he seems to not mind my presence, even if the light is on! he just does his own thing, he is starting to groom himself in front of me, and my cats!! which I know is a sign that he is getting comfortable. please correct me if this is wrong

Re: hey
Personally, i wouldn't let cats anywhere near a hamster not even near the hamster's cage.
They shouldn't be allowed in the room the hamster is in but that is only my opinion of course.
Hamsters are prey animals and cats are hunters, no matter how domesticated they are, the instinct will always be there.

Great advice here! Cats and any other predatory animal(including but not limited to ferrets and dogs) should definitely not be allowed in the same room as a hamster or any other prey animal for that matter. It doesn't always cause observable stress but that does not mean it isn't causing problems - better safe than sorry anyways with a nice secure door between these sorts of pets at all times

Most of the time I come in like a helicopter Mom. But sometimes I don't see it.

Re: hey
Keep the door closed! Better for your peace of mind.
We brought our cats home in August and it took I think 2 days before I started having nightmares about them getting into the hamster cages. Marnie cat is FAST so she's gotten past me at the door a few times which isn't the end of the world but the door is always closed when I'm not there to scoop her up and boot her out again! God knows what she would get up to left to her own devices lol
