The lovely Lewis
Finally! It took a few days but I found his name eventually so can I now introduce you to... *drum roll*... Lewis
You may have already seen him in my other thread. I had decided I particularly wanted a Chinese ham for next one but with two hams already (robo Hector & Syrian Cleo) I wasn't supposed to be getting any more just yet. And my spare cage was definitely not a spare cage but as Chinese hams seem to be quite hard to come across locally, I had decided that next time I saw them, if there was a male then I would have him. And there he was, last of the litter, in an Oxford pet shop who were also going to stop stocking them so I knew it was meant to be!
Lewis is a teeny tiny 11 weeks old and super quick. A bit skittish & flighty, as you'd imagine for a chinesey but on day two he was already taking sunflower seeds from me and isn't too fussed by my shadow when I'm near the cage so relatively speaking he seems quite chilled out. He's a Chinese so I did say relatively....
So far, he's happy to pouch sunflower seeds, has taken a liking to millet and has sniffed at but turned his nose up at mealworms and seems to be a big fan of his Whimzees toothbrush. He's currently on p@h muesli while I transition him over to food that isn't quite so, err, artificial looking but he's enjoyed the odd bit of burgess I've added in and the millet spray. Taking things slowly but going well so far.

Re: The lovely Lewis
Hello lovely Lewis!
I've really been looking forward to this thread & more photos, they're lovely!
He does look teensy in there & totally adorable of course, he seems to be settling in really well already.
Has he started digging & burrowing yet? That's when you know they've really made themselves at home lol!
I wouldn't worry about doing the transition from the P@H muesli to a better dwarf food too slowly, they love small seeds so he'll probably take to the change really well & there does seem to be a lot of corn in that one for a Chinesey.

He seems to be using his house now, which is good. The first couple of days he dug himself a nest under his wheel. Y'know, the part of the cage with the really shallow substrate I'm hoping now he's more comfortable up the other end of the cage he'll discover he can dig properly. I guess in p@h he never had that to know what to do with it He took to his wheel straight away though. It's an 8" Willy wheel but it's quite wobbly (the stand is stable but the wheel wobbles on it's axle) And as its dark purple it's quite hard to see him in it. So I think I'll swap him over to the spare 6.5" silent spinner I have when I've given it a good soak. Lewis is a wheel pee'er though so I won't be getting him a closed in wheel. But that's easier to deal with than peeing in the best so of the two I hope it stays that way.
He seems to be going straight for the millet and other bits of Burgess first, over the p@h so I think you're right, I won't stress too much about the swap as I'm really not keen on the p@h but a few days more days of gradually phasing out should do the trick.

Re: The lovely Lewis
Hello lovely Lewis, it's lovely to meet you properly and I must say, you are a very cute little guy.
Chineseys are terrible for peeing in their wheels but like you say, it's probably better than having them pee in their nests. I think that's the only use James actually had for his wheel.
It's great to hear that he's happy to take sunflower seeds from you so fingers crossed he carries on progressing well.

Re: The lovely Lewis
I've changed a couple of things in his cage to give him more cover and he's not seemed phased by the changes so that's good. I'll upload a picture of his current set up.

Re: The lovely Lewis
Peeing in the wheel is way better than the nest lol! I just seem to get both so when Whisper runs in her wheel & I say "You go girl" it's double speak! More in the wheel less in the nest, they really don't pee a lot though so I'm sure he'll be a cinch to spot clean
He does sound like a very chilled little man
Look forward to seeing his cage.
