Re: The lovely Lewis
No idea. Presumably as they climb a bit more it's for better balance.

Re: The lovely Lewis
It's quite cute to see their little tails going when they're climbing.
I agree though, after watching my Chineseys I'd say that they use them for balance too.

Re: The lovely Lewis
Different species, different country of origin, different evolution! They do use their tails to grip a bit like little monkeys lol! & are much more agile than the other species & the tail helps with that.

Re: The lovely Lewis

Re: The lovely Lewis
I think I'd be lethal with a tail lol! I'm bad enough getting my dressing gown tie caught in the door. It could be useful for nudging people out of the way in the Supermarket though

Re: The lovely Lewis
I'm so proud of little Lewis, not making a fuss when you cleaned his wheel Velma. Love this little gem more everytime you post.

Re: The lovely Lewis
Well, I think he figured nesting there isn't great if the wheel gets moved so he decamped and burrowed under his food dish but I wasn't t happy about that as its a big walk in reptile dish that was previously used as a sand bath for Hector so I was worried about it squashing Lewis. Also he'd pushed a load of bedding near his bottle spout and gotten it soggy so I've changed the dish for a becobowl and moved it. I heaped some bedding in the corner so he could cozy back up. I think he did as there's a little entry hole but he also seems to have taken to his house now too. He's not sulked about anything though, which is good. He regularly runs all around his cage so was excited losing all of it but all his living needs were down the one end, wheel, bottle, food, nest so now he's settled, I'm glad I've moved his bowl as its making him use the whole cage for everything, if that makes sense. Keeps him more active looking for everything. I'm so in love with him and his little expectant face when he thinks he'll get a treat. He's pretty greedy though so I'll probably need to watch that I've never really weighed the hams. With Cleo I can feel what's going on and I've never really thought of it with Hector, plus with him it's a lot more visible what's going on but I think I need to start weighing little Lewis.

Re: The lovely Lewis
He does sound like a laid back kind of guy
It does seem to take a while with them to get things just right in the cage, more than the other dwarfs I think, especially with their burrowing under everything lol! but you two seem to be working things out well between you!
I love those little holes that appear in the substrate
Do you put all his food in his bowl? I don't know if it's more of a pet shop chinese thing but both of mine have been a bit greedy, maybe less so once they have a nice hoard stashed away, but I think either scatter feeding or hiding food around the cage is a good way to keep them busy & happy working for a living!
I'll be curious to see what he weighs if you do give it a go, we don't get that many Chinese hams to compare really.

Re: The lovely Lewis
Well, I sort of go with a messy approach with the hams so I put his food in the bowl but I drop it in by hand so it goes everywhere then there is a bit to it have straight off and a but to find. He doesn't seem too greedy with the food in his bowl but he knows he always gets some seeds from me so I need to watch out for that
