I always put the house on top of a good layer of substrate rather than on the floor of the cage.
My Russians have rarely done that so I think it may be a particularly Chinesey behaviour & perhaps Lewis will be doing it soon too!

Sooty has never done it and I guess it seems odd to us to put all that effort into tunnelling under a side when there's a door but you're right, it probably seems natural to them.
May would always tunnel under the sides and would pile up the Fitch at the door so no one could get in. James has a bendy bridge at the door to his house but he's been piling the Fitch up around it.

Which shop did you buy it from? I don't know who I'd use it for yet but it's just too cute.

Cleo digs under her house, she hardly ever uses the door. The house has inky ever really been a roof for the huge nest underneath
Can't remember if I bought that house from towy Vale hamstery at the show or from the pet shop nearest the station? Think I saw on the stand at the show, didn't buy it, and then bought it in the shop in town.

Re: The lovely Lewis
Finally! Pleased to meet the very beautiful Lewis!
Velma, I love his cage set up. The pics show him so content.

Re: The lovely Lewis
Thanks T-Liz! I'm pleased with how quickly he's settling in. Hopefully it'll turn out to be a good setup for a Chinesey

Re: The lovely Lewis
Hamster cam is back! My OH set up the camera on Lewis' cage to capture what he gets up to at night. I can watch the camera feed on my tablet at home and the camera also has a kit on sensor so when he's ho it triggers the camera and takes photos. It has night vision so we can see what he's up to. We made a time lapse video when I first got Hector so am hoping to do the same for Lewis. I did set the camera up on Cleo too but never stitched the photos together to make a video so I should probably do that for her too
These are a couple of the stills the camera captured, from last night.

Re: The lovely Lewis
That's cool that you can capture what he's doing whilst you're not around.
I really need to get myself one of those.

Re: The lovely Lewis
Ooh that's good! Looking forward to seeing a video. I would love to see what Charlie does at night. Can you put the details again of what you need? I seem to remember thinking you could use a laptop camera to record all night, but probably need infra red software or something.

I think someone else did it with a webcam and lit the room with a red light but that's not what we used.
It was my OH's idea. He bought the sort of camera you could put on a bird table or in a garage. It has night vision and it's wifi so you set it up to your network and then you can watch a live feed. There is a motion sensor and when it's triggered it takes 5 stills and emails them to you. The video we made of Hector (and that'll we hopefully make for Lewis) is stitched together stills that create a sort of time lapse (but without the nothing happening bits of a straight forward video). My OH is all about the nerdy tech. He set up a bike computer on the wheel of a past hamster
But you could set up a web cam near the cage if you have one and some red LEDs around the cage to provide light you ham shouldn't be able to see.
