Re: New BEW Chinese Hamster!
Thanks for all the help guys
I've taken the SS wheel out of Luke's cage for now, and I'll try him on it again in a few days. Once I help him get going in it, he can run perfectly, but he can't start it up if he stops. It does seem stiffer than I thought it should be, and I'm not sure if I can do anything about it.
I've ordered the Trixie wheel to try (a lot of the reviews said it was really quiet as well), but if it arrives and isn't suitable, I'll return it and try and Karlie wheel. I honestly didn't think it would be this hard to find a durable, quiet wheel for a Chinese, as my dwarfs can use the silent spinners fine on the whole. But even Frankie has a little bit of trouble starting it up sometimes! :-/ x

Re: New BEW Chinese Hamster!
I`ve been speaking to member Serendipity regarding those Trixie wheels and they are flimsy, but Chinese are not as heavy as Syrians, so see how it goes. x

Re: New BEW Chinese Hamster!
Update on the wheel situation!
Luke really couldn't work the Silent Spinner, sadly, so now Oswald and Franklin, my dwarfs, have an SS each.
Luke now has a Trixie wheel, and although it is sort of flimsy, this means it's very light, and he can work it no problem. He's had it for four days now, and it is actually pretty quiet! I think it was a bit expensive for what it was (I paid £11.50 including delivery) compared to the Silent Spinners (I paid £13 each for them), but I'm just glad he's finally got a wheel that he can work, as well as his Flying Saucer.
Since it is quite flimsy, I'm not sure how long it will last, but if it gets to a point where it's noisy I will have to get rid and try to find another wheel, as his cage is in my bedroom.
I'm also now trying to potty-train them! It's not going well :P Will keep you updated!

Great that Luke is able to enjoy his new Trixie wheel.

Re: New BEW Chinese Hamster!
You could go for the Wonderland wheel but these need Plastikoting to make them easier to clean and Chinese hamsters do tend to pee a lot in their wheels! x

Re: New BEW Chinese Hamster!
The new design silent spinners are awful as we have all noticed from reports on the forum. I have old ones and even the tiniest Chinese can work these. they should run at a touch but the ones with the blue bit at the back are rubbish!
We have never managed to get them to not pee in the wheel. The more you clean it the more they do it so to be honest you are better to just leave it a bit grubby and just wipe it sometimes and only wash when you do a full clean out. That is Chinese for you. He is gorgeous!
I had a look and got stuck for 45mins in the Great Northern retail park car park lol but alas no white ones there!

Re: New BEW Chinese Hamster!
I think you may have been lucky to get a quiet Trixie wheel, mine did love hers but I had to bin it the noise was so bad!
I'm telling my hams that use the silent spinners to take really good care of them as they are fairly old, before any changes, & work perfectly!
I've found the Karlie wonderland wheel (with a good couple of coats of plastikote) works really well for my Chinese, she loves it.

Blue bit at the back? Neither of mine have that, and they're still quite stiff! The front section is the coloured bit, then there's the main white section, and the clip is yellow :-/ Hmm.
That car park is the worst!

If the Trixie wheel gets noisy, I'll have to try the Karlie Wonderland Wheel I think. There's not that many options, really. What sizes do they come in though? Luke's cage is quite long and wide, but not that tall, and I got the 20cm Trixie wheel, and that fits with maybe 1/2 cm between it and the top of the cage.

Re: New BEW Chinese Hamster!
The wonderland wheel comes in a 20cm size so it should fit if the Trixie does.
