That's what I thought Holly.
Well, I have decided to separate them. One was really active, the other very shy and rarely out. He's in the little house and won't come out. I've set him up in an unused aquarium for now while I monitor his behaviour.
He will have to use a shallow water dish (very small exo terra, I've put a very little amount of water in) for now until I can pick up a bottle.

He has everything he needs. Hope he's ok and just being shy.
I'll keep you informed. I think now they are separate I'll call him Larry.

Barry is doing well, he's had some mealworm fur supper

Do you think he will jump out of a 12 inch high tank? I have a lid for tank but it has no ventilation, just a small oblong hatch that I can open.

It`s probably for the best traste as Chinese hamsters can just turn for no reason, so giving them their own space is nice. You can interact with them individually now and let them enjoy their own space. The little shy one (Larry) will start to come out of his shell once he knows he isn`t being intimidated (if he was being intimidated) by his brother.

Keeping the little water dish as well as having a water bottle hanging are both good as it means if the bottle ever fails, he has the dish to fall back on. Chinese hamsters love plenty of substrate for digging down into, so a little house made from an old food or teabag box with the floor taken out and placed on top of the substrate will act as a great sleeping place for the boys. Just cut a few doors into the box and turn it upside down, so it has a roof but no floor. Plastic houses are not great as they have solid bottoms and can get smelly. Cardboard boxes are cheap and can be chewed safely!

I did a partial clean out of Barrys cage. I put extra substrate in, he loved burrowing in it. He seems happier himself now. He lets me stroke him, and comes out at the sound of my voice. Getting there.

I also cleaned Larrys house out, as it seems he or Barry had been using it as a toilet and it stunk!
I'm making him a new house, and might use this one as a sandbath when I get some sand.

Does PAH sell the sand?

I use the bird sand and sieve to remove the oyster shell. Or you can get it online from amazon e.g. Supreme chinchilla sand

I'm glad Larry's settling down to single life.

I don't think the husband likes the ides of two cages around the living room, i also have a tarantula and he has a snake. So........the son is moving out in a few days, and me, hubby and daughter have been, lets say, debating, over what we will do with his room.

I have decided a pet room would be good. We can throw a futon in there, the pets cages/tanks, and the dogs grooming table/equipment. We can spend quiet time up there whenever we want.

Just trying to hurry son along now hahahaha!
