A sort of poem about my shy Chinese Hamster
Just before I go to bed, I walk softly into her dark room,
and stop, looking into her tank, waiting for my eyes to adjust.
At dusk, she'll get into my hand to collect seeds.
But the night is her own time, peaceful, and I don't intrude.
There--that shadow--did it move, or are my eyes just struggling to see?
Or there.. is that her? I'm not sure.
Then I see a tiny shape slink across the brighter-colored floor of the tank.
The wheel starts to move, and against the white I see a bar of smoky brown.
Silently the wheel spins and spins, then stops.
A tiny sparkle of light gleams off a shiny eye. She's looking at me.
The wheel moves again. She's not afraid of me any more.
Peanut is doing what she enjoys, and I slowly, softly leave.
