Default Different species

Morning Chaps and Chapesses

I've noticed a change in behaviour in Theo and Sky (Chinese dwarfs) since the arrival of Sir D (Syrian).Theo and Sky were quite active before, but I don't know if they can smell Sir D or what, but they hardly come out now

Sky has always been the more brave of my little Chinese chums, and ventured out last night, he was digging in the substrate (his favourite occupation), and Sir D was stood on his back legs, listening intently in Sky's general direction.

The cages aren't too close together, but do you think they know of each other's existence (I'm thinking so), and if they do know there are other hammys, do they really care?

Yours

Porky Pig

Ours have never really batted an eyelid.

They live in the same room, and thus are aware of each by scent - but all remain active. I think there's a certain amount of curiousity, but I wouldn't say recognition.

Harry, our Syrian escapee, has been found sat on the bars of the dwarf cages... with Tupac and Biggie sniffing away. But I wouldn't put much on them recognising each other as hamsters.

i personally think they can smell each other, Lola my Syrian can definatley smell my dwarfs, i even think shes scared by them for some reason.

Just to add that my dwarfies all go through stages of hiding away. Chip who is usually out most of the day and night hardly comes out at all recently, and Dale who is a lazy bum has been out loads running on his wheel and he is usually asleep all the time.

They can smell each other and I imagine that any scent of a strange animal, which is not another hamster scent of their on species, would make them more alert. In the wild they would treat any unknown animal scent as a potential predator on the prowl or threat They have a good sense of smell so can likely smell him from some way away

I have a hamster corner of my bedroom with Sammy, a syrian, Mango and Chutney, dwarfs, and Frisbee a robo. Sammy tends to stare at them as they frantically run around doing their stuff but apart from that I personally haven't noticed any difference!
It might just be they are more tired?

I've got syrian, chinese, winter white and robo in the same room and they seem fine with it. It's what they're used to. perhaps it's because the syrian is new. They'll most likely settle down. My winter white said he likes being able to see and hear other hamsters. If I have just one robo in my room they get depressed, but pick up when I take another up there!
