Default Savic Hamster Plaza Review

Hi all,

Thought I’d drop a review of the Savic Hamster Plaza which I moved my Russian dwarf baby to from a PicoXL a few weeks ago.

Some positives:
- The floor space is very big and provides a lot of room for toys
- It fits nicely on the IKEA desk I have (100x60cm Linton desk)
- The ramp up to the shelf can be made less step by putting more substrate in or the shelf lower. Plus you can put the ramp where you want it
- The door is big to allow for good access
- The little shelter provided is good and can be opened well for cleaning
- The tray is nice and deep to allow for a good amount of substrate
- The bar spacing seemed quite good for my Russian dwarf (can’t comment on robos though)

Some negatives:
- It’s very difficult to set up if you’re doing it alone
- It’s difficult to move when set up if you need to, especially if your hamster is in it. The walls can come apart when lifting
- My baby was used to a few shelves so it was a bit difficult for her to adapt to the new one
- I’m not a fan of the shelf being rounded and no protection from falling, I had to move some things from below it in case she fell

I can’t really comment on the wheel as my hamster didn’t like wheels but it seemed a bit tough when I moved it with my hand
The bottle holder provided didn’t seem to work but I think I put it in wrongly

Overall, I’d recommend the Savic Hamster Plaza, just make sure you set it up where you plan to keep it, you have someone with you and set it up where you have space. Also, I wouldn’t put anything under the shelf, if your hamster goes to the edge, they can slip.

(Shadow wouldn’t recommend it though, it smelt too clean and new, and it wasn’t her old home.)

It's a good cage Agree with the point about it being fiddly to build and move - the pros and cons about it being a "knockdown" cage. One of the biggest pros though, IMO is the large front opening door.

Lucky dwarf hamster. However it is very tall for a dwarf hamster and there could be some fall risks if the hamster scaled to the roof height or monkey barred across the top. Ideally it needs a full level for a dwarf hamster - or no items at floor level that can be landed on and cause injury - just lots of substrate - this would leave a lot of the floor area empty and toys under the shelf.

Unusual for a hamster not to like a wheel - have you tried a flying saucer? They nearly all love those.

It really is a huge door, I could fit my whole head through it if I wanted to check on her, and I don’t have a small head .
I definitely agree with you about climbing and monkey barring, luckily, she was nearly 2 when she went in due to Indian pantry moths in her old cage so I knew she wasn’t a climber.

She had a flying saucer in her Pico and used to love it but she didn’t get much of a chance when she was young as her sister preferred it and she just didn’t really use it much as she got older

Ah. If she was living with her sister you can get dominance and one being territorial over things. It might be worth getting her a wheel of her own (a different one) as she may enjoy it now. With a new wheel I find putting a couple of treats or a bit of cheese in tempts them on and then they start using it. An upright wheel would be different to a saucer. The trixie 20cm wheel is a good option and mot expensive and it’s semi enclosed so that might tempt her in.

I had to split them up about a year ago and she got a full cage clean and new stuff when I split them. She used to like the new flying saucer but seemed to just go on it less as time went on. Unfortunately she passed onto the rainbow bridge this week so I think it might just have been a case of getting older and slowing down. I might look at that wheel if I get another (the mrs says I’m not allowed another at the minute but I’ve made a deal so I might be able to if I find the perfect one)

When they get older they seem not to use a wheel any more but they usually do at night. You can test by putting a bit of substrate on top before you go to bed for a few nights and see if it’s gone in the morning. It would be very unusual for a hamster not to use the wheel at night.
