This cage might be fine for one dwarf hamster (just) but not a Syrian.
It can happen since the Animal Welfare Act provides for preventative action rather than previously when action could only be taken when an animal had already suffered. But the question is whether something that is suitable for one animal will be equally suitable for all animals in that species. These days we take an individual approach rather than a group approach. We cannot say for example that a 50x30x30 cage is bad and a 70x40x40 cage is good without considering the individual animal that is housed in it.

According to the Animal Welfare Act the RSPCA is free to decide whether something is right for an animal in its particular circumstance and is unlikely to affect that by issuing guidelines.

They used to (or still do?) sell the Ferplast Mary cage yet they still seem to think smaller caging is adequate. They obviously don`t apply the RSPCA guidelines.

This cage would be better if it was attached to another cage but being from Rotastak, that means only Rotastak modules could be added. Still, I suppose a few add-on`s would add a little exploration to the existing cage. It looks okay though ad it is that bit bigger than the Duna, so that`s a positive.
About the mary, I bought it for my syrian (rip) and beforehand the sales assistant said 'its good for space but you could get the pick and mix cage with a shelf which would have the same amount of space'. Well she wasn't fooling me Anyway, they should market the mary as a syrian cage rather that a rat cage, as its obviously far too small for rats.

This is a very useful review and I am sure that some people will find it very interesting... I like the overall idea of the cage and your set up, but frankly the cage itself I don't like as I personally feel that it is far too small for any hamster to live in (Syrian, Chinese, Dwarf or Hybrid).

I agree! That's why I ended up buying a second cage for each of my boys and joining the two together! One cage as a food/sleep area and the other as a play area (although they often confuse the two!)

i have just had to have a refund on mine as my syrian chewed through the plastic clips and nearly escaped and same with the ball. she loved it overall but didn't really use the wheel as it squeaked a lot and she uses her new one loads more
good overall if you don't have a hamster that chews everything in site

Smarties has this one. Its perfectly fine for now, but I think hes going to outgrow it pretty soon.

Yes it is a pretty fiddly cage to set up and the access to the cage through the roof is pretty hopeless, not much space at all.

We have already gone through two shelves already as one broke (a hook on the side came off) And we are on the 3rd wheel, as the one that came with the cage was too noisy so after buying a second same one that comes with it we bought a quieter one.

Smarties sleeps underneath the shelf and uses the house on top of the shelf to wee in! I did consider taking the house out completely, but there are little holes in the shelf for it to clip into and I don't want Smarties to get his little feet stuck in them.

He does really seem to love it in there though and loves zooming through the tubes.
