Matty, just for once can you give the patronising attitude a break? It really is becoming very tiresome.

I'm very aware that hamsters chew for many reasons including boredom....despite the fact you seem to consider yourself an expert Matty, I think you have an awful lot to learn. Maybe some humility would be a start?

I disagree - some hamsters do chew because they're bored....but as I said before, its one of many reasons....from attention-seeking to sheer bl**dymindedness!

inresting cant remeber were its was but i read it was an addictoin somewere or it could be just a bit of the two (feels more reading on the subject coming on in the near future )

As an example, my LH yellow Custard bar bites for attention. It took me a while to figure out that was why he was doing it but its very obvious. So, I made sure he was given more attention and he stopped. Last night was the first time in months that he's started chewing his bars again - I was really busy so he didn't get playtime at his usual-ish time. By 10pm, he obviously decided enough was enough and started chewing to remind me that his service level agreement wasn't being met! I got him out, we had a cuddle and play on the sofa, followed by a whizz around in his ball and he never touched the bars again. He's very predictable.

Well I really like Rody's and I keep Syrians in them. I have 8 at the moment, all have wodent wheels and I have no bar chewing whatsoever, which is more than I can say for some of my other cages.

i think it depends on the syrian. I have no bar chewers here aside from when i'm going to bed and they're protesting at being put in the cage. once i leave the room they stop.

i always use this example, but it's an excellent one... i got a rescue ham who'd been in a rody (with an 8" wheel) and she had bit the plastic all around the bars so much that the bars just fell out and the rody was un-usable. Her foster carer said she was a nightmare chewer. anyway, me gets her home and puts her in a gabber and she never bit the bars or plastic ever again. i think she just wanted a) a bigger cage and b) more attention.

When we moved Sammy from his Ferplast Rainbow to the HH he carried on bar chewing but does to it less. We've tried everything. He gets out from about 8pm to 10pm/10:30pm and thats when I go to bed so sometimes you really can't help it!

I have a Rody not for any of my hammies but for Dandy (mouse) I like them this is my first Rody have liked them for ages. Dandy really like it which is what matters and I know that he is safe in his Rody. I have Bar chewers 10 of them infact they have loads to do but they are in wire top cages I think if half of my syrians were in Rodys they would be chewing there way out, they have loads to do and they come out everynight but still do it, Kumi I wouldn't put in a Rody at all he is scared of being shut in he like to be able to look out, he doesn't like the ball either. I think it comes from where he was in the tanks at P@H for quite a few weeks and got hot.
