Default Savic Sky Metro Cage Review

Hey,

so I just bought the Savic Sky Metro for my Syrian hamster, Arthur. My initial reaction to the cage when it arrived boxed up was 'wow.... thats big'. Its measurements are 80 x 50 x 80 cm which makes it the same size as the Savic Hamster Heaven. The cage comes with the tubes, a medium Sputnik, the extra level, a water bottle, a food bowl, a house and stairs.

As you can see from the image, the cage itself is extremely large and takes up the entire space of a dining table that is meant to sit four people. It's extremely spacious and allows for my large Syrian to have all of his toys and accessories without too much trouble. My personal favourite feature of the cage is the large opening at the front of the cage. This is by far the largest opening I've seen on a hamster cage and allows for easy access to the cage if you, for example, just want to clean your hamsters bed without having to take the entire top of the cage off and disturb your hamster.

There are sadly a couple of negatives about this cage, but all of which can be easily fixed - but it will cost you. As you can see, the extra level is an extremely weird shape, which means that you cannot put anything on there at all as it just doesn't fit. It also means that you cannot move the cage around too much, as if you remove that extra level there is no place for your water bottle as the base is too deep and access needs to be made by the extra level. You can, however, purchase a mesh one from your local pet store (it will needed to be ordered in for you - just ask for a savic catelogue) or a plastic one which does not add a full extra level. This will probably set you back around 20 quid, sadly.

The house which comes with the cage is extremely small and probably wouldn't even house comfortably a dwarf hamster, nevermind a fully grown adult Syrian.

The tubes to the cage are extremely stupidly made. To gain access to the Sputnik, the hamster needs to run through the cage. The problem here is that the tubes don't attach to the sputnik therefore there will be around a 0.5cm space between the Sputnik and the tubes which could, potentially be dangerous if your hamster misjudges the space, which could lead to broke bones or a nasty fall. To fix this, you would need to buy an extra tube, which retails at around 3.50 GBP at Pets at Home.

The wheel is also a problem. The wheel, unless high up so your Syrian can't reach it, will rub against the base of the cage, making an extremely loud, annoying noise. As you can see, I've taken the wheel out and replaced it by his silent ball. You can cheaply buy a wheel stand from Pets at Home for around 1.99

To sum up;

Pros:
Large space. Your hamster will look tiny in this cage and you will be able to fit a lot of toys.
Large front opening to the cage allowing easy access
The water bottle is extremely well made.
Your Syrian will love the tubes. Mine likes to sleep in them as you can see from the picture :P

Cons:
The extra level is extremely stupidly made that means you cannot offer variety to your hamster unless you buy the metal level from your pet store - which will need to be ordered.
The wheel is pretty much useless - and noisey - without the purchase of the stand
Sputnik access is not practical and could injure your hamster
The pink house is also useless due to its small size.

Although there are some problems with the cage, I'd rate this easily a 4/5 purely because of the space on offer. You cannot see in the picture, but there is also sufficient space under the extra level which has my hamsters house and some other toys.
