Re: want to breed
Im not too sure about age but there is a section on the wiki regarding breeding.
May I ask where you got your hammies e.g petshop or breeder? I only ask this because it is not best for your hammies or any pups if the hamster is petshop bought and you are unaware of the hamsters genetics.
There are other member on here that are very knowledgable regarding breeding and Im sure they will be happy to offer assistance

Re: want to breed
I know a forum is a place to ask questions and learn...but that is quite a basic question that should be answered in any good book about hamsters, and is on a lot of websites. Perhaps you need to do a bit more reading around the subject before you go ahead.

Re: want to breed
reccommend the book 'hamster lo paedia' The breeding section is absolutely fabulous!
Aswell as the whole book
To answer your question - the best age to breed a female is 4-5 months for her first litter, a males age is not overly important. As long as he is old enough to understand 'what to do' and not too old so hes become infertile.

Re: want to breed
i would still read up and visit breeders before. Ypu need to have all the cages ready and preferably homes...
i would not jump into it lightly as fun as it may sound. read the sticky in the breeding hamsters beforehand.
Not being nasty but if you do not know the age to breed a hamster then you might not be as experienced as you thought..owning them is differnt to breeding.

Re: want to breed
Its good to hear that they are from a breeder, as many people on here ask about breeding pet shop hams which noone knows any history about. I am also glad to hear that you know that they are not related and hopefully you know a little more about their genetics before breeding. I hope you get the answers you are looking for on here best of luck

Re: want to breed
When I made a thread about this I was quite arrogent about it but if your serious then I would listen to what everyone says because alot of people who respond to you are very experianced.
Something Amethyst ice told me about is the white belly gene if you don't know about it then I would read up on it as it seriously stopped me in my tracks.

Its not that we are trying to put people off just they are livign beings and of course their welfare should come first and sometimes love just isn't enough
You owe to the pups and in deed the mum to know as much as humanly possible before breeding to ensure everything goes well. Its just liek preparign for a human baby..just there are no hamster natal classes lol
plus theres all the prep for the pups and the possibility taht you may not rehome all the hams and then your population has gone from 2 to 10! Thats alot of time and pennies needed even if you make bin cages etc
