Getting Two New Hamsters, worried one is preg
So... well the current people I'm getting hamsters from had an accidental litter supposedly. I'm not sure if they were just ill informed, or purposefully bred them. Either way, mom has been kept with babies until they are at least 1 month I think. What I worry about most... is if I'm getting a pregnant hamster (since I'm adopting the mother), I can handle it. I've gotten a pregnant rat, we don't disturb pregnant/birthing animals. But I know hammies are a little more sensitive.
A little bit of my background. I used to breed reptiles, scorpions, and jumping spiders. I am very aware of genetics and being careful with them. I'm very aware of providing all appropriate needs for all ages, seperating at sexual maturity, etc etc. But I just... don't know the process of hammy pregnancy/birthing/separation if I need to. If someone could point me to some info just in case! that'd be great. I just wanna be prepared T^T

Is it a dwarf or a syrian? Normally pups are separated from mum at 4 weeks in to single gender groups until they go to their new home.
If it is a dwarf and mum was left with dad then she may well be pregnant again as they mate right after birth.

It is a syrian from what I understand mom and dad were separated.

So just got them home, mom is a little rounded. Not sure if they keep left over localized weight from the babies like humans can or not. Have never had a pregnant hammie. Her name is Olive and the other one is named Sterling. Both are happy, healthy, and very sweet. I suppose if she is pregnant i will know in the next few days. Should i feed her like she is just in case?

Just feed her as normal. Overfeeding can cause the pups to get too big and this can cause difficulties with birthing.
If she does have pups that's when you increase protein and extras so she provides enough milk.
Unless she has been mated I don't think she will be pregnant. They sound lovely

Sterling i think was too young to come to a new home tbh. He/she leaning he though until i get a good look. Their person thought he was a boy. But i dont think he was an ethical breeder. He got two hams with a nice pedigree and decided to go for it from what i learned later. Sterling has a Copper father and his mama-Olive- is a Dark grey het. Both parents are long haired.

Copper is a very rare and complex combination of genes. Dark grey is also not common and not a starter colour as it carries risks of kinky tail.

I know about bith since i looked it up. I dont know if either have kinked tails since i cant overly touch them. But idk. I don't know if i trust this guy. Im also not worried about their pedigree as much as health since im not breeding them
