Detailed resources in Hamster Genetics, with pictures/drawings
Hi there,
I'm trying to find a very detailed resource on hamster genetics that contains images/drawings so I can see what the combinations of genes look like.
This is to make a visual "hamster generator" based on genes so I need to know what every possible combination looks like in order to program it.
This slideshow is good but doesn't go into enough detail...
Something like this with text about it would be perfection.
Does anyone know where I can find a resource like that?
I am considering buying this book, which I know mentions genetics about Syrians, but I can't know the level of detail and images until I buy it and it is expensive...

A visual hamster generator is a great idea. I would look at this resource as it very informative on colours and genetic. Although some colours don’t have a photo but it may be helpful as it include descriptions of what each colour looks like.

The slideshow in the first link is awful. Some of the illustrations of the colours are not even syrian hamsters!

Thank you for your interest! I was able to find a book on rodent anatomy that contained detailed pictures of Syrian hamsters skeleton, muscles, etc, but not information on genetics. I was able to find some information on genetics by joining a Facebook group about hamster genetics + finding some hamster knowledge sites that had some info on that + some original research from a researcher from the late 1900s on the species.
Even with all this, it is hard to picture what colours and patterns will come from specific hamsters. The basic genetic rules are easy to understand and not so hard to implement but the multitude of combinations makes trying to figure out what the offspring will look like very challenging. I think at some point I'll need to speak to an ethical breeder somehow.
There are some technical challenges to conquer as well when it comes to generating a unique 3D hamster based on all the genes. However, this will be easier than the genetics knowledge, although it will still take a long time.
All in all, this won't be a fast project by all means. As with game development, I expect this to take years, especially given that I'm working on it on my spare time.

Very true, there is a lot of conflicting visual information and since hamsters are sort of a niche topic, especially genetics, it is hard to find detailed information.

good luck with the development of it, i'd love updates on how its going whenever your able to work on it, i love genetic type games (literally playing Leporidae a rabbit genetics game as i type this lmao) i just love learning about anything genetics related and i'd love to learn more about hammy genetics but i have no idea where to start. ive looked into a few different websites but its usually just blocks of text thats a little overwhelming to try and understand its great to hear someones actually working on a realistic hamster genetics based game very excited to see it up and running sometime in the future

I just had a look at that game and it looks really cool! It's similar to what I'm trying to accomplish so it will be quite useful, thanks for sharing!
It's quire hard to study the genetics of Syrian hamsters properly yes. The big majority of websites that have more in depth information on genetics are incomplete and some abandoned. Will see what the future holds.
Thank you so much for your enthusiasm
