Unexpected hamster litter - figuring out colours!
Hi there, I recently purchased (what was supposed to be) a male Syrian hamster from a local pet store, and SURPRISE! 7 babies showed up a few days later. We are down to 6 babies that are now 8 days old, and I was wondering if somebody could help me with what colour they are or will be? Not sure if it's too early to tell.
I know nothing about colours, at all, it's all confusing to me lol. I'm attaching pictures of mom who I think is some form of sable? Maybe a silver sable? Please correct me if I'm wrong. Father is unknown, but she was housed with some golden (they were orangey, and super common in my area??) banded hamsters.
I attached a few pictures of mom, and one of the babies. Let me know if they work!

Re: Unexpected hamster litter - figuring out colours!
I've left pic of mum but we don't allow pics of pups with eyes closed. I've had a look though and it's hard to tell with babies this size as a similar dark colour shows first with a number of colours. Mum looks to be a Sable banded long haired. Some of the pups have bands there for sure and possibly some dominant spots or combination of both.
You will have a better idea in a few days and can post pics of them once their eyes open. She's a cutie though.

Re: Unexpected hamster litter - figuring out colours!
I see this color and odd white pattern a lot these days. Not sure if the Silver gene on Sable allows the Sables to actually show the Dominant Spot Pattern as I was always lead to believe that Dominant Spot doesn't show on Sable. Had this gal sent to me from a friend who was dumped a Black Band who was already bred so only God knows who is the Father.

Her brother has a solid belly with a huge patch of white on the chest and right side arm pit, but solid sable on the rest of his body. He has mottled ears, and the Poly White gene has run rampant in the Commercial Breeding Farms of late too.

Will look forward to your pup pics once eyes open and I'm sure there are people on here that can help you with their colors.

Re: Unexpected hamster litter - figuring out colours!
Here are my 5 babies. We have 2 females, and 3 males. Three of them look very similar, but colouring is a tad bit different (darker VS lighter). I'm noticing they're going from being grey, to having lots of brown hints in them like mom.

Re: Unexpected hamster litter - figuring out colours!
They do look like sables - they should have pale eye rings and a pale undercoat if they are.
The bands look to be double banded and may have another pattern as well as the band

They do have the lighter eye rings! Do you think the darker two will stay that dark grey colour?
