It's because disturbing young litters to take a photo runs the risk of the mother destroying the litter out of fear.

Thank you for the explanation. That would be so terrible if that happened.

Yes you are correct. Specially if you have a calm environment for the mother and pups and at one point you decide that you should take your phone camera out and start shooting. However in this particular case, the mother was so much disturbed by everyone in her previous family and the moving was very stressful, that taking a photo with a zoom lens from far away was not my concern. I was more panicked when i removed the green tray a.k.a. her old cage.

Sorry but that made me laugh. The little pup copying his mum.
Yes this is funny
Anyway i'm starting to work with the pups. For now i'm just using my largest carrier which is suitable to transport rabbits and guinea pigs, i'm afraid of using my actual play pen. Its made out of bars (1cm spacing), and there is one pup that is the smallest and seems to be king of bullied by the others and i think that it might fit through the gaps.

Side story (i wanted to relate this one long ago). When the pups were about 10 days old they were still squeaking around. I was in the living room watching a movie. So a character in the movies picks up a phone and dials.
Chr: Hello, General sir?
Random pup: Squeak, squeak.
Chr: Everything is all set, we are ready to go.
Random pup: Squeak, squeak.

I had to pause the movie to stop laughing.

Ha ha. That really made me laugh. Is it a glass tank you have? I am just wondering if it’s a hand coming from above that is making them nippy. A tank is taller than something like the duna Perspex tanks and I know I had issues trying to do things from the top. So letting them walk into something might be better. Souffle has a great “Apple “ playpen for her litters - I think it’s a child’s ballpit.

This kind of thing - this one is only £11!

Ideal for hamsters (without water obviously).

I have the ikea samla bin with no mesh and no cover above. A kid pool interesting idea.

Yes a few people have used those as playpens Easier to access the hamsters maybe. Same idea as using the bath for taming maybe! Not sure how a Samla bin would work for handling as it's from the top/high up again and not much room to run around.

It might sound a bit insane but maybe a cement mixing tub, preformed pond liner(depends on size), or even a decent sized not too tall cat litter tray might work better in this case? All would require close supervision too with the typical low height all of those have(same with a lidless bin). They're not the largest options of course compared to a kiddie pool but that may be beneficial in this case. Maybe someone with more dwarf experience can confirm how good or bad an idea this actually is!

Now that I'm seeing that idea I'd really like to try it myself, and worst case scenario if it doesn't work out it can always be reused into a short digging tray for out of cage use(almost definitely a Chinese hamster in my case though, not sure how it would work for other species). The pups are absolutely precious either way!

I have big update.

So story time. Yesterday i had an exhausting event which lasted for 12 hours. My knees are still sore from balancing the DSLR with a heavy zoom lens. I arrived home and i was feeding my hamsters.

Naturally i was feeding mum and pups first. After i put new mix in and i have all the pups with mum in my sight i hear squeaking from a corner of the bin. I knew she had the second litter. My husband told me that right after i left in the morning he started hearing that squeaking. I was lucky because i went on suunday and bought 2 more bins. I immediately took all the older pups out and i put them all in one bin for the time being. I was so tired i was having foggy vision. I just crashed until morning.

Unfortunately the new bins i bought were supposed to be 74x50 cm but that was just at the top of the bin. At the bottom they are 69x30 cm I also gave them 2 wheels and its rather crowded This is why i am seriously considering sexing them and putting them in 2 bins.

Now i have questions:
Is the mum going to be upset that i just took the old litter out?
I had another question but i forgot....sorry.

So guys, any recommendations are welcomed.
