This has been the constant conversation of the household... who get to stay and who gets to go. Basically, originally, my son picked out the mom, then I said "let's get 2 so they won't be lonely", then I picked the dad (which was supposed to be a girl) so had I not said anything, we would all be sitting just fine with the original one. At this point, my son is struggling because he wants to keep one of the pups, so now I'm trying to help him understand all of this... so none of choosing who goes or stays has been fun.

Re: Help determining gender of Teddy Bear Hamster Pups
As an adult he will be much more likely to be overlooked which isn't really his fault is it? You must have all formed a bond with him and I'm sure he is a nice hammy. The pups grow fast.
I think it is a nice lesson to your son that he should show loyalty to the hamsters originally homed by your family and that they are living creatures who have become family and not toys so to speak.
I'd have a deep family chat about how he might feel in that sort of position.
My daughter is 22 and she wants to keep more than one pup but we have discussed it fully and how it will impact on the time we have for our adults and she realises it isn't fair to keep extras.
Perhaps a close friend could take a pup then you can keep in touch?

I have to say I'm totally with Soufflé on this one and as difficult as it may be this situation is an excellent learning experience for your son. I worry for the future of poor dad if returned to the store. Personally I do think he should stay with you.
Pups grow so fast anyway - give it another few months and the babies will not be babies any more any way.

Re: Help determining gender of Teddy Bear Hamster Pups
Just weighing in here. I am a mug, but I could never return an animal, even if it was aggressive or bitey which it does not sound as though the dad is. If you keep Mrs and Mr hammy in separate cages I am sure you can give them both a happy home. You were prepared to keep them both in one cage and keeping them separately won't be much more work.
