Default Getting to grips with genetics... what colours?

Hiya!
Im trying to get my head around genetics, and yellow has confused me.

If a female satin tortoishelle was put to a RE cream banded boy, what colours could be expected?

Im trying to create my own little bible of EVERYTHING before I consider a litter of my own! Lots of consideration!

Thank you for your replies in advance! X

There's information about the yellow gene on the Midland Hamster Club site, as well as some info about other hamster genes.

It would depend what colour the tortoiseshell is and whether there are any shared recessives carried by both. Mating cream and yellow isn't a good idea as it muddies the waters and the cream can be very hard to get out of yellows later down the line. I wouldn't recommend that pairing regardless of the colour of the female.

Thanks Vectis,

Ok, thanks I have read that and understand that.

"Half of the male babies will be yellow, half will be non yellow.

Half of the female babies will be non yellow, half will be tortoiseshell"

Could you please define 'yellow' and 'non yellow'? Is this a colour in itself of a type of colour?

Using just the pair you state above, unless your female is or carries Cream or Cinnamon all you could get in offspring(again using the pair you stated above) would be Golden and Yellow males(pending on if her Single yellow gene was passed on or not), and Golden or Golden Tort Females(again based on if she passed on her single Yellow gene or not). If the Banded male is Homogeneous for the band gene all pups would be banded, if not then some will be banded and some solid(Genetically based 50% would be banded, and 50% solid, but seldom does the results end up that).

I see from your public profile your have shown hamsters occasionally, so are in a country which has Hamster shows.

That said:Your Cream carrying Yellows will not do well at all in a show and all the resulting yellow pups from the above pairing would only be good for Companion/pet hamsters. Cream masks(covers up) Yellow and even when just carried will cause the Yellow coloring on a tort to completely lack any ticking , and on a Yellow male it will wash out all ticking making the hamster poor show quality.

If the above female hamster should carry cream, then you can have what to the naked eye looks like Black Eyed Cream, but actually will be a Yellow, or a Tort genetically. Cream Masked Yellows, and Torts are so much like BEC in looks many have shown as BEC only to be disappointed when bred by producing Yellow or Tort pups. A fact which is very frustrating if you planned a litter to continue on a show line of BEC.

You could do much much better with Breeding Yellow with a different pair of hamsters then your example. It takes just as much time, care, and effort to breed quality hamsters who have show potential, then it is to breed just companion/Pet hamsters.

That said it would completely depend on what your goal is for breeding Hamsters. If you actually have a pair as described in the example then you would be producing nice Goldens who will carry Cream and Cinnamon, But your Golden Torts would be poor quality show stock and also would not be sought for future Show stock producers as the Cream is carried washing out the correct desired Ticking on the Yellow patches.

Hope this helped you understand more about the Yellow gene.

Yellow is yellow This is a specific colour as defined in the NHC standards (photos and a description of this can be found on the MHC site I linked to above). 'Non-yellow' is whichever other colours involved in the pairing are, e.g. black, golden, cinnamon etc.

Thanks Nancys Hams, it does clear that up for me!

Im not planning on that combination, purely trying to figure out the best combination between all of my hamsters to see what would produce the heathiest, show quality and friendly hamsters.

My other possible combination is of my LH black boy and tort girl.

Thanks

Do remember that color is only one part of a good quality show hamster. Body type, size and fur quality also must be included in your decisions for pairing up potential mates if breeding for show quality. So if your Black male has the same faults as the female even that would not be a good cross. With the second pairing it would again be the same results as above if she doesn't carry for black BUT unless both carry for cream the 2nd pair would be better then the first pair as far as breeding show quality colors.

Do you have pedigrees of the mentioned pairings? It is very important to know what genes are carried in both parents as well as what faults may run in a line as you want to avoid doubling up on any faults which will take away from the hamsters scores at a show. I wish you good luck in your breeding plans.
