Chinese hamster breeders in North Charleston

I will be moving to the USA in two days time to live with my boyfriend and I was wondering if there are any Chinese hamster breeders in the North Charleston area. I don't plan on getting a hamster for more than a few months just until I find my feet etc.

They are only illegal in California not in South Carolina. You can have as many as you want

Not a breeder but if they can sell them you can have them. Just got off the phone with a wonderful salesman at the Chain store with the bouncing red ball and they are a female store and have 6 lovely Chinese hamsters just waiting for new homes. So there you have it They are allowed in North Charleston. If you can't find a breeder at least you know there is a pet store that does sell them.

Actually they are RESTRICTED not illegal in California but re-read my post it said they sell them in North Charleston in pet stores so therefore they are quite allowable. In fact the sales Rep says nothing is illegal in SC including keeping a tiger if you so feel like owning one.

That's is no where near California even, I must be really be missing something here

I doubt there are any pet store in the State of California selling Chinese hamsters

but in fact there are penalties for being found with a Chinesey in CA

You are right Cinnamon Bear that you can be given a penalty for owning a Chinese Hamster in California but they are restricted rather than being illegal, meaning that you must have a permit to keep them. These permits are granted to research laboratories and licenced exhibitors and the average pet owner is unlikely to be issued with one.

I think it's sad that such a lovely species is treated so unfavourably, particularly when the other species of hamster are permitted.

Thank you Fluffagrams for your reply! Hopefully that ban will be lifted from the state of California soon. Would be terrible if you had a pet Chinesey and then had to move to CA for some reason? What would you do with your pet? Would be terrible to have to rehome your hammy. Glad they are legal in my state, hope they will always be available for sale/adoption in the coming years.

It's far worse in Australia where No Species of hamster is allowed at all in the whole country.


The OP stated that they thought they were illegal in North Charleston, but they are quite welcome but unsure if there are any breeders in that area who raise Chinese Hamsters.
