Default The Mirdies

We now have some photos of the first handling session of our latest litter of babies. These are Mira's babies (SH yellow) with Woody as the father (SH golden satin). We have two golden tortoiseshell females (one is a lot smaller though and really isn't well at the moment, after a vet trip this morning the thought is that she seems to have a UTI or infection around her bottom, we are applying antibiotic cream and hoping for the best), one yellow satin male, and one really odd one that we were not expecting at all - it is a female, and appears to be chocolate brown all over with brown ears, black eyes and possible light tortoiseshell marks on the face. If anyone has any comments about this colour please do suggest! We were only expecting yellow boys and golden tort girls as both parents come from pure lines, but there is obviously something in there way back that has made an appearance.

We are very pleased with the litter, they are absolutely beautiful and were on the main very calm when first handled today, especially when you consider both parents are little livewires!

Little female, we didn't get her back out of the cage after the vet trip so as not to stress her:

So cute!

So hamsters actually do come in different sizes? I mean like, you can have small ones and large ones in a litter? I'm just trying to figure out how my old hamster was a beastly woman compared to my little Gizmo.

They can grow to different sizes, mostly they end up the same general size and weight (our males are on average 180-190g and females 210-230g) but you do get the odd runt in a litter and they may not always quite make it to the same size as the big greedy ones. We are hoping our little one might catch up, but she has a long way to go yet before she's even out of the woods let alone worrying about growth.

We have been putting a steroid cream on her for the last three days now but things are not looking any better. Due to her age and size the vet was not too keen on Baytril but it's starting to look like trying this will be the only option. She is bleeding and swollen around the bottom area and it is causing her a fair bit of distress, sadly she won't stop licking it which is not helping but she obviously doesn't realise this.

It's heartbreaking actually, as she is the most super little thing, very trusting and never has any fear about climbing on my hand when we get her out for a run and her treatments. Would be absolutely horrible to lose her, but it's not looking too great.

It sounds as if there is something wrong around her anal region more than just soreness furrypolka. Is she pooping at all? It could be a twist in the bowel or a prolapse which is very painful. I think the vet needs to recheck her with further investigation as baby hamsters can go down a lot with any bleeding. Poor wee thing I hope she pulls round soon. XX

She's pooing and weeing normally. When the vet scruffed her it looked like the skin was sore and weepy and the vet suggested a possible UTI but then gave us the cream, thinking about it I am not sure how this is meant to help internally.

She is still well enough in herself, runs on the little flying saucer we have given her and is eating fine. Just awful to hear her squeak in pain when it does hurt her, though.

We are taking her back tomorrow for another look and I have asked for a different vet for a second opinion.
