Question Breeding Advice?

I have had 2 litters of dwarf hamsters and I am knowledgeable about how to take care of babies and what kind of habitat they need, however... Are Fancy Bear Hamsters any different? I am researching and would like to get opinions from experienced breeders.

Thanks,
Laura

What dwarfs to you breed? I'm not sure what a fancy bear hamster is to be honest, are you talking about Syrians?

What's a fancy bear hamster? If you're talking about syrians, you have to be quite knowledgable on their genetics as breeding two syrians with the hidden 'white belly gene' is dangerous and will cause eyeless white pups. So you have to avoid breeding two patterned Syrians to be safe.

I'm not a breeder so i don't know too much about it, but i'm sure someone will come along and let you know

Also are you looking after mum too?

A fancy bear hamster is a pet store name for a Syrian hamster.

Syrians are very different from dwarf hamsters when it comes to breeding and genetics. Nancy's Hamsters is very knowledgeable. There are a few other Syrian breeders on here. Syrians are different from dwarf hamsters in a lot of ways. They are bigger of course. They are solitary. They require bigger things to accommodate their size.

If you breed hamsters no matter what kind shouldn't you already know the proper names for each and every hamster? Surely through your research of breeding Dwarves you came across syrians somewhere?

It's important you know the species of animal you have, you should have papers that came with your pedigree hamsters unless you bought them from a pet shop (which isn't recommended to breed from)

I don't mean to seem patronising as i can see how it would come across if you're very educated on the matter. But because i care about hamsters a lot and i only want the best for them i need to ask questions like that, haha Can i also ask do you remove the father of the pups before they're born?

I think the care is going to be pretty similar like extra nutrition like porridge, baby food or rice pudding (made with puppy milk).

But the timing for pregnancy and weaning is different (I think) Also Syrians are solitary and need to be supervised during the introductions incase a fight breaks out.

Hi LTS
To start breeding Syrians(fancy Bear is just a gimmick name used by the commercial Pet trade to add several more dollars to a common hamster which should not be getting that kind of price) I suggest a mentor who will work with you to help you learn all the genetics of Syrian Hamsters as well as how to strive for a quality, healthy, easily tamed Syrian. Before ever attempting to breed Syrians.

The biggest difference off the top of my head is Unlike Dwarf Hamsters Syrians are solitary and require MUCH more care and cautions when the mating occurs. Unlike Dwarf Hamsters YOU have to record the day the female is in heat and YOU MUST put the female in with the male at the precise time she is receptive or you will be looking at a huge Vet bill or worse a dead male and seriously wounded female as Syrians can not be caged together to wait for them to produce a litter. The male MUST be removed from the breeding bin(a bin not used by any Hamsters except for mating purposes) after a very short amount of time(20-30 minutes on average), and you must be there the whole time they mate as the female will decide enough is enough and will turn very suddenly on the male to run him off in a place he can't run off which often results in the male being injured or worse if you are not there. I have breed Syrians since 1976 on and off, and in 2004 I had a male lose his eye when a fully standing female decided she didn't want to breed anymore and quick as a flash she spun around and bit the male right in the face(and I was right there with all needed supplies to prevent this from occurring)
As posted above you have to have strong knowledge on Genetics as some colors are not pleasing to the eye if crossed, and some patterns combined can result in deformed pups or worse dead ones.

Unlike Dwarf Hamster pups, Syrian pups once weaned can only stay together for a very short time and then MUST be put in their own solitary cage. That cage has to be at the least a 66lt bin cage. That means lots of extra bins to clean and mouths to feed. As well as wheels and toys to buy. Which of course means lots of $$$ to spend just to assure a sell able pup.

If the above has not made you stop and really think is breeding Syrians for me then I suggest to not start Also with your Dwarf Hamsters unless you have certified proof they are pure bred you are breeding Hybrids which can be successful But also can risk selling a diabetic hamster to a person, and of course the high risk of losing a Mom cause her pup has a Campbell dwarf size head and the Mom a Winter White size birth canal resulting in a dead litter, and expensive Surgery to attempt to save Mom, and your heart being saddened at losing a sweet Hamster.

If you are willing to learn PM me and I will try to help you with Syrian genetics but do please write down all the issues with breeding Syrians I listed above and really think on them and before buying any Syrian Hamsters to breed make sure all those negative things are understood and your beyond a doubt ready to face them and deal with them.
Lastly please, please, locate a reputable breeder for your Syrian breeders. The Syrians found at most large chain stores are not bred with quality in mind but Quantity and profits. If your gonna go the expense of breeding Syrians why waste money on weak and inferior hamsters who often eat their pups as their born and produce nothing of quality at all. Be sure the Hamsters you select have at least a 3 generation pedigree and a breeder who will stand beside you and guide you as a friend for life.

I wouldn't assume that I don't know my breeds just because I used a pet store name, I saw a Syrian in a pet shop the other day and they cutely had him named "Fancy Bear Hamsters", so I used it.
Thank you for your feedback, I enjoyed reading all of your responses.
