Re: Molly and Pippin's Babies
She's sleeping away from the best today, I opened up to put some food in. How long do I leave it before I assume they're gone?

Re: Molly and Pippin's Babies
So sorry to read the latest updates this morning, corrieberry.
I would think in a few hours’ time if she is still sleeping away from the nest then she has no more living pups. They will not survive long at that age if they are not receiving Mum’s milk or warmth. She will probably instinctively know there is something wrong with the litter and would not just abandon them for the sake of it.
Just a tip for anyone else reading this thread, if you do feel the need to pick a pup up and put it back in the nest it is wise to find the Mum’s wee corner and firstly rub your hands in the wet shavings so that your hands have more of the smell of the cage. Not pleasant for a human to do I know but I always find if I need to put a pup back in a nest to do this first to lessen the chances of the Mum rejecting the pup.
Thinking of you. It is hard but you have to leave it to nature. They are just too young to make it on their own yet without mum’s milk.
I know many experienced breeders that this has happened to so don’t be hard on yourself. It’s just what happens sometimes.

Re: Molly and Pippin's Babies
Such a shame if all the pups are lost. I know nothing about breeding hamsters, but as others have said this is the way of nature - the fittest survive & the weak are not condemned to miserable lives. It is amazing how animals know what to do for the best by sheer instinct, without intervention from anyone.
Hugs from me & humf.

Re: Molly and Pippin's Babies
Oh Corrie I feel so bad for you. I'm so, so, so sorry.
As Spyro said, at least you didn't lose the mom, and at least for me, the moms come before the babies.

Re: Molly and Pippin's Babies
She's been in the nest a lot today so there is a chance we still have a baby or two left! She's been under her blankets all day - I gave her some porridge, chopped up carrots, cucumber and apple and she snaffled it all up and took it back to the nest.
I'm tentatively hopeful, still mourning the banded pup a bit, and trying not to get my hopes up too much. I've been knitting and cleaning the flat today, and Piccadilly and Pippin have been hanging out with me

Re: Molly and Pippin's Babies
Oh Corrie! That would be wonderful. Make sure it's all quiet and peaceful for her. She may be able to cope with 2 babies. Oh, my fingers are crossed for you all. <3
