my daughter put my female and male together while my friend watched her do it

hi

i've had a really bad epileptic seizure today so have been to the hospital while my mum watched my daughter then my friend.

i went to get changed in the bathroom while my daughter was showing my 22 year old friend the hamsters.

my daughter came in to the bathroom and in the carry case was peaches and pippy both syrians.

i screamed what are you doing and my friend came running she said 'scarlett wanted them to be friends, they've only been in there 20 seconds before u took them apart.

i sald why did you open the cages, no answer just the reply of Scarlett wanted them to be friends. (scarlett is 3)

my friend knows full well you shouldn't put syrian hams together.

when i saw them together peaches was on top of pippy, is it quite possible that she could be pregnant within that very short space of time? (pippy is 9 weeks)

for some reason at the mo peaches and pippy are both running round there cages like somebody possesed.

l'm so mad words are beyond me at the moment, after the day i've had i'm sitting here crying as i type.

Hey, sorry to hear about your stressful day, I can understand you being annoyed! I'm no expert on hamsters, but it sounds like them running around as if possessed isn't much of a surprise if they've just encountered other hams for the first time in weeks or months. Even if Pippy is pregnant, know that you have lots of support here and tons of people who will help you with great advice

I expect like petal10 said the hamsters are just over-excited now from meeting each other & hope they should calm down overnight. Let's hope you were quick enough & nothing happened. Will keep fingers crossed for you that all is well

sometimes people just don't think. Look at it as both are ok and probably just a little excited.

there is always a possibility sadly so just read up on the breeding sections and keep an eye on her.

And rest up yourself ok xxxx

I'm sorry to hear this happened :/

For what it's worth Hjalmar used to go crazy sometimes after smelling Minnie, he'd run like a possessed little ham on his wheel/saucer and jump around like he was hyped up on energy drink. I think it's a normal reaction.

Fingers crossed there's no pregnancy.

There's a very slim chance it could be bad news, but hopefully it'll be ok. Best of luck with the hams and we're all here if we can help somehow

I am sorry to hear this. First off, ild start giving some extra supliments, they will be running wild now as they know the other is in the area, would be able to smell eachother and set them off. maybe keep them in seporate rooms for the night.

normally heat is an hour-2 hours after lights out, every forth night, and lasts a few hours, so fingers crossed, she wont be on heat, but if she let him mount, theres a chance.
if she did have babies, you would be able to see in about 10 days time, she will get bumps, her nipples will become noticable. she will give birth day 16.

extra food wont hurt so things like egg, tofu, chicken, babyfood, fresh greens, mealworms, anything high protein is good

fingers crossed she wont be preggers, but better to be safe then sorry.
your friend should know better, yea, i would love my syrians to be friends, esp my half sisters, and their mum n dad, sometimes I will hold bon or lucy outside of hush's zz2 so they can see through the plastic, mostly so i can coo all over them saying how she is their pretty baby XD but never ever get to touch.

My Syrians live in the same room but well apart. If I have one out to play the other runs round his cage like a hammy possessed so hopefully its just excitement. If it does come to babies you'll have a lot of support here and help in finding homes for them.

I know its hard with a little one but try and get some rest. xxx

rest up... accidents happen. i know you're upset, but is your daughter OK? she's probably shaken up too, especially with your seizure and then seeing you so upset over the hams... don't want her to feel too guilty or that she's done something terrible.

good advice re possible pregnancy here

Apparently (Siegel, 1985) the male hamster may not actually do that much in the first few 'intermissions' of mounting, so it is possible that if they actually were only there for 20 seconds you might have got away with it? It seems as if they usually need to have a few goes with a little rest of a few seconds in between before they are in a position to fertilise the female.
