I wouldn't worry yet, Matty - it was 10 days before I even glimpsed my last litter and 8 days is too soon for them to be coming out on their own. I personally wouldn't risk disturbing the nest at this stage, it's far too risky.

Is mum spending most of her time in the nest? That's as good an indication as any that there are babies in there.

I would leave well alone for a little longer Matty. They will be visible soon enough.
Athena is just playing with you - she knows how much you want to see them and is hiding them to make the surprise greater

Oh it can be very nerve wracking Matty. The only thing I can suggest is that if you are sure she is okay in herself then to make sure she is fed and watered and leave her be.

I dont know really how long it can be before you would expect to see chinese pups out and about, but sooner or later I am sure if they are there then you will see them.

Are you hearing squeaks and movements still? the thing is Matty, there is only so much you can do anyway. You say that she is leaving the nest more, but for short periods, and that sounds like she is being a good Mum.

My current litter are a noisy bunch now, but were very quiet early on. Princess though was such a good Mamma, and made sure that they were all fed and comfortable so well, that we heard nothing from the pups.

Try not to worry, and my advice would be to save the vodka for the time being! Hope that Louis' toe is okay - Im sure it will be.

I think you are doing the right thing, Matt.

I'd suggest, in a day or two maybe (I think it's too early now) if Athena seems keen to come out to play you could get her out in her ball and put her in another room, then very carefully part the bedding with a stick or something (no hands) and see if they are there.

You must be careful not to leave your scent anywhere and put lots of yummy food in to distract her when you put her back.
