Re: Is My Baby Snow Pregnant?
Do it NOW! I can't believe how completely irresponsible you are. At least do your research before buying a pet, that is what an sensible person does. Why did you even buy two if you only had one cage. That hamster is still growing herself and is really too young to have a litter even though she is fertile.
Seriously what were you thinking? EVERYONE knows if you put a male and female together they breed with ANY animal. Why would you think it would be any different?
It looks like you need to a LOT of research because you clearly haven't done any as the first thing you learn about syrian hamsters is that they live alone!

Re: Is My Baby Snow Pregnant?
Er... Just to warn you, the two hamsters you've probably inadvertently bred are potential carriers of the white bellied gene. This means theres a risk of the pups being anopthalmic whites. If they are theres a good chance Snow will cull them, but if not its an additional problem you may need to deal with.
Is Pop out of Snows cage now? (I know the new cage is meant to be for Snow, but moving her now will just stress her more so its safest to let her borrow Pops cage until the babies are four weeks old and she's separated from them.)

Re: Is My Baby Snow Pregnant?
as everyone has said already, please do remove Pop from Snow's cage immediately - Syrians should never be housed together, under any circumstances. even if you're intentionally mating a pair, they should not permanently live in the same cage - they should be introduced and then, after the mating (or not), separated. I can only say good luck, as Snow is very likely to be pregnant, and Syrians can give birth to up to 20 pups. you will need to find new owners, or failing that, provide more housing - ONE TO A CAGE - for all of them. that could be a potential 20 more cages, on top of the 5 you should already have.

Re: Is My Baby Snow Pregnant?
I know everyone advised to remove Pop from Snow's cage immeditately (which I agree with) but I wanted to point out that the post stated he/she would later due to work.
Which in that case, It must be the first thing you do when you get home, no side trips. Go straight home and do it. Everyone covered all of the topics such as not housing them together, giving the mother bedding etc. So I won't be redundant.
On a more personal note, I know if I told my boss I had to go home because of my hamsters, they would laugh in my face. If I actually left, I may lose my job. But then again, I wouldn't be in this situation in the first place. I hope that you aren't housing more pairs together.

Oh my goodness, I agree! This situation is very unpleasant. It's never a smart idea to house Syrians together, EVER. Even siblings! It makes me sad because pet stores like PetSmart and Petco house multiple Syrians in one cage, which is saying to customers that they can live in the same cage... It's terrible! Hamsters can breed as early as 4-5 weeks old. It was stupid to have a male and female together at all!
I wish more people would understand the importance of being a responsible pet owner. This world has a big problem with pet over-population (among other things, but that's not the focus of the discussion right now). Cats, dogs, and even hamsters... They are being bred too much! This ruins the lines, the health, the temperaments. And worst of all, who will take care of all the unwanted animals out there due to accidental breeding? And how can you be certain someone won't take a female from the litter, and accidentally breed her, too? Then you have tons more unwanted hamsters added to the situation!
I just wish people would pay more attention to their animals, and make better decisions.
I hope you can take Pop out of the cage as soon as possible, and never house multiple Syrians again. Not having a cage ready is a lousy excuse! Don't take on another Syrian if you don't already have a cage readily available! She is probably being hostile because Syrians are very territorial and will fight sometimes to the death if they have to. Next time, be more prepared.
If Snow is pregnant, I hope you're able to find good homes for them (if she doesn't cull the babies - which would probably be for the better). Good luck.

Can I remind members that litters are kept together at a young age, even at breeders, while they can breed as early as that it is fairly rare. I think the reason many new owners may house syrians together is because they were not informed that they are only kept together in stores as they are babies. While I acknowledge that owners should fully research a pet before buying sometimes this doesn't happen which may be the case here.
The OP has been advised and I suggest members wait now rather than "scolding" the OP and derailing the thread.
