"Blizzard" hamster
I was at a local pet shop and they had a variety of hamster called a Blizzard Hamster (at least that's what they called it). They were all white with just a bit of gray on the tips of their ears, and the strangest thing is that they had kinky hair. They looked wooly. Has anybody ever seen or heard about this kind of hamster? Does anybody know anything about it?

Re: "Blizzard" hamster
its probably reffering to the color. i see it a lot at petstores where they call it something different. like i saw at a petstore where they were selling pudding hamsters and everyone was making a huge deal and i explained to a few people that it was only reffering to the color. that was it. perhaps that is the case here?

Re: "Blizzard" hamster
Were they syrians? They could be dark eared white and their fur would be rex if it was wavy. I'm just guessing though
Pet shops will do anything to raise the price of a hamster, so it it's a certain colour, for example black, they would call it black bear to make it seem 'special'.

Re: "Blizzard" hamster
I'm pretty sure it's a Syrian hamster with a Rex coat type. Their hair is kinky, almost curly-like. They have curly whiskers, too. They're uncommon, especially in petstores. So your lucky that you got to see one.

Re: "Blizzard" hamster
Ha, amazes me that these shops come up with stupid names just to sell their hamsters.

Re: "Blizzard" hamster
Well should I get one?? Tiberius was a Syrian and he died of wet-tail. It was GUT-WRENCHING watching him die. I intervened with antibiotics and subcutaneous fluid but it was too little too late I think. I know Syrians are more prone to it than other breeds, and I don't think I could go through that again.
What do you think? I lost Tiberius in November and I've been thinking of adopting a successor, but I've had no luck finding a shelter that has any hams.

Re: "Blizzard" hamster
There are a couple hamsters in NH listed here:
Pet Search Results: Adoptable hamster Pets in Bedford, NH: Petfinder
If you're willing to drive a few hours, there's a wonderful hamster rescue shelter in Mamaroneck, NY that I would highly recommend! It's overrun with a recent large wave of rescues and could really use adoption help now. Hams are in really wonderful conditions there, and you can set up a play date and handle all the hams in nice play pens

Thank you... I don't live far from Bedford! I had no idea there were hams there to adopt. I'm going to get one!
