Waiting is always the best option.
Im waiting until next Spring to get my breeding male roborovski and the Summer to get my female because - even though I have both sexes of roborovski at the moment I dont have their histories and two of them are pet shops the other 3 are rescues. Even then though I have to wait until late summer or spring 2013 to breed them despite having been researching it for the last year!
It can be difficult to wait and sometimes I admit to wanting to just breed the ones I have but then I quickly kick myself when I look at my Pippy and what irrisponsible breeding did to her. I never want to see another ham go through what she has to.

No, I don't breed Syrians, although it has crossed my mind. I have no access to good breeders in my area. I have researched genetics a little and I know quite a bit but I do not have room nor time and resources to breed.

There is very few breeders in the US. There is a breeder is Ohio that is on here and posts occasionally, but I think she is on regularly. I'm not sure how often she breeds though, if at all anymore. And Sweet Cheeks who is not on here.

I honestly don't know of any others, thus why I thought about breeding, but I'm not ready for it, and I honestly don't believe you are. After a few months of research I'd reevaluate myself, if I were you.

I forgot to say, you can check this site, a lot of sites aren't available anymore and some that are are no longer breeding. http://www.angelfire.com/wv2/woodvie.../breeders.html

Thanks I am ready! I do admit as i read back over the whole post and i do think i made myself sound not ready! But i am. I guess i need to do more searching for breeders. I have transport, so getting hamsters are not the problem. Thanks for the site, i checked that out a few days ago.

Ok, but i would still like to know what color i should be looking for to be a good match. What colors should i go after for to produce more tortiseshell? I know health is more important than color, so yall dont have to worry about that!

if you breed with yellows or torts you will get torts in your litters.

Have a read up on genetics and you can find out all you need to
The same for what colours go together.

I have to jump into this mix and add that I'd run the other way from the "breeder" that you found. The recommendation to breed brother-sister together is a very big red flag. Then there's the fact that she can't identify whether the Cinnamon sire is Umbrous or not. Thirdly is the mating that she did- a Black Tri to a Cinnamon (possibly Umbrous). That just seems to be a random breeding to me and not one with a specific goal, or even worse yet, a complete lack of understanding of genetics.

Then there's your comment about bringing out the Tortoiseshell. It means you don't understand Syrian genetics and have much more to learn before just pairing hamsters to "bring it out". Links were provided in the posts before mine, I recommend you explore those first and then figure out what color you want to breed for and come up with an ideal pair to produce the colors that you want. For breeding Tortoiseshells, you're better off with neither parent being a Tortoiseshell! Read the posts about Tortoiseshells to figure it out.

There are very few breeders in the US and very few respectable ones in that bunch. I am the breeder in Ohio and I do still breed though I haven't had any litters for several months. I have just started breeding all my females in the last two weeks and will hopefully have lots of pups two months from now. You should know though that while it isn't hard to get breeding hamsters from me, it isn't easy either. I do expect you to understand genetics and have specific goals in mind. I expect certain ethics to be upheld. You're already on the right track posting here with breeding questions before the fact and before purchasing your breeding hamsters. Waiting for a few months for quality foundation hamsters is much better than using the first hamsters you can find.
