Default Breeding Hamsters?

I did think about getting hammis a male so she would have pups, but hamster heath websites say it is best not to breed as there are downsides (Like losing pups due to illness), so I have never tryed it. I am asking to people who have bread hamsters, what is it like to have them ??

Thank you for your time

Not to offend you Minicooper, but you have allot more to learn before you even think of breeding a hamster. Especially a Syrian. I wouldn’t try doing something like breeding until you have had a few years owning hamsters and experience under your belt. There is an article about breeding on the website here http://www.hamstercentral.com/user.php? ... ticle&a=14

I suggest you give it a read. Syrian hamsters are solitary animals. You cant house a male and female together. They will fight to the death if you do. Getting a male means you need another cage and double accessories. If you cant find homes for the young ones in advance that means you will need to eventually separate them into individual cages before the reach sexual maturity. It’s quite an undertaking.

Also one should breed to better the general quality of the animal. For example.. breeding for aesthetics or temperament.

I’m glad you are so responsible Minicooper It really pleases me to see that! There is definitely nothing wrong about researching about breeding and maybe even checking out some local hamsteries if you can find them! Its best to ask questions now, then maybe in a few years after owning a few hams you will be ready finically and mentally to breed!

We certainly have a handful of experienced hamster breeders on the forum to answer your questions.

Yes, Like I say in one of my other posts. I am going to an Animal Rescue centre on sunday to have a look at the animals and maybe volunteer to help out.

It might help me as I want to be a RSCPA inspector when I am older.

That’s excellent Minicooper. Id love to work with animals if I could find a job like that. For now I just own lots of pets. I think that volunteering at a facility like that would be wonderful experience! Look into it for sure!
