Default Clarification About Hamster Chatter

The sensible part of me tells me that Suzie is a content hammy, but could I run something by you as I am not a hamster expert.

Reading various posts, book and google reasearch, reveals that an annoyed and grumpy hammy will click/chatter their teeth... and sure enough,in the early days, Suzie did this and then took a bite. However, she has not bitten for months now. She is incredibly tame and happy to be handled, but makes a gentle chattering/clicking sound eg. tut tut noise when you suck your tongue between your teeth. It is a soft sound, not loud. She does it with me and my kids, but seems very content with no aggressive or frightened behaviour.

So is this content hamster behaviour. Some google sites say yes... some say no. Relatives who last saw her when she was younger were amazed at how tame she had become.

No, Wofunny, I have not seen this, but thank you. Suzie also constantly grooms herself when being cuddled and your post indicates that this is contentment.

I'm obviously blessed with a very content hammy. Thank you.

First off, that stretching hamster picture is absolutely priceless. I could think of so many captions to go with it.

And to answer your question, it sounds to me like she's a happy girl My Wibbles would make a similar noise all the time. Especially when I would give him sunflower seeds. I think a soft chattering sound is fine, but if it is loud and sounds like hissing or popping, it probably means back off. With Wibbles, I figured out how to make the sound with my lips (sort of like a really soft kiss), and when I did it, he would chatter with me

On the other end of the spectrum, my Jasper used to make this ridiculous noise frequently. It sounded like he was saying "PEW!" I wondered if he was sick, or scared, or unhappy, when I first heard it. Then I heard him do it when I gave him one of those sweet treat blocks, and again when he took a sand bath, and I realized his ridiculously loud PEW sound meant he was happy. It was quite cute, though not at 4 am.

Spud clicks constantly when I hold him . He was squeaking at a pair of my boots earlier on tonight as they were in his way when he was in his ball.

It's called bruxing in the rat world. It's a sound that they make when happy, content, angry or nervous and can be compared to a cat purring. I first used to noticed it when one syrian could smell another on my hands. A lot of people still think it is only a sign of an angry or nervous hamster. But I have seen it with content and happy hamsters too.

Sometimes when they get really into the bruxing they can also do what is called boggling. It's can be difficult to explain right. Here's a video of a rat boggling: Clicky. And also a video of my girl Patch (not good quality at all) boggling and bruxing: Clicky.

Whilst I was playing with Apollo, he did make this noise too, he did it as he was falling asleep on my lap so yes, I would say that this is contentment.
