At least thats progress, offer him a treat and let him sniff your hand to get used to your scent

I'm glad too! I bought him some choc drops and yog drops, which he seems to be taking from my hand (he moves very hesitantly towards me now )
Had a bit of a step back last night tho...
Went to put him in his ball, wasn't having none of it, jumped over my hand, escaped through the open hatch, and was running free around my bedroom
Got mum to lock the three cat's downstairs, dad helped me catch him with a little rockpooling net, and he was safely contained in his ball!
Let him run around for a while in his ball, by then stopped hissing, and put him back in the cage, bish bash bosh!
Not sure whether the whole experience has traumatised him for life.....it took about an hour to capture him, poor little guy was so stressed! x

Re: Stroppy new hamster
don't worry about it, they have short memories
The fact hes taking food from you is really good!
Some hamsters are generally just more vocal than others x

No - this sort of thing is often much more traumatic for the owner than the hammy! It will be ok - just keep up the good work - treats and bribary help!

Re: Stroppy new hamster
He will stop eventually. Huxley was very fiesty when I first brought him home. Hissing at me all the time. I just took things slowly for the first couple of weeks & now he is fine & loves to be handled. I had the same thing happen with the ball too! But now he goes in fine.
I can't offer any different advice, as what other members have told you to do, is exactly what I did. Good Luck

Thanks guys, I'm becoming more confident about it now
BTW Rach, when did you first handle Huxley? Did you just pick him up despite his protest? x

Re: Stroppy new hamster
Shazza. I did just pick him up which is when I tried to get him in the ball. Shouldn't of really. So I went back to hand palm up in the cage. Then one day I managed to scoop him out & sat in the bath with him.

That's a better way to approach I think. Next clean out I will move him into my zoozone 2 which has better access from the top to scoop him out xx
