Hamster Communication
I was looking at a hub on how to create a natural leopard gecko enclosure (I am really excited about getting one! See how I bring it up even though there's no reason to?) and I thought I'd have a look at the hamster pages.
This might interest a few of you! Maybe some of you can add observations of your own.

Re: Hamster Communication
Yes defintely interesting! I find it hard to distinguish clicking and chattering.
Will listen very careful next time he does it, but he sometimes stretches during playtime so I guess this is good

Re: Hamster Communication
Thanks that was a good read - helpful and interesting! Jake stretches quite a lot, I'll have to pay more attention to his ears (whether they are upright, forward or back) and cheeks, not had him long and he's still very timid and jumpy. I'm going to try and start the taming tonight as suggested on wiki with taking him in the bath, (empty of course!) I'll pay closer attention to his body language

Re: Hamster Communication
Good read - lots of interesting stuff there.
Boris does lots of cleaning and washing when he is out of the cage so glad to know that is a sign that he is comfortable

They must be super chilled
Chewy had a good wash on the settee earlier, I was pleased, it's a while since he has been on here. I also made him a mini cucumber sandwhich (whoegrain bread crust, with a bit of cucumber wedged in). It was seeeew cyuuute. Simple things.. simple minds..
Echo location? Really? I was thinking that the other night when chewy was clicky clacking. I'm going to research that a bit.
I'd be interested to know the precise difference between clicking and chattering. I'd imagine chattering is that faster, quieter noise they make and clicking is the more definate sound. On the whole, my hams have been super quiet anyway. Apart from what I define as clicking sometimes.. Argh. Confusion x

Re: Hamster Communication
I think I now know the difference between clicking and chattering.
I just heard a funny noise from the direction of Chewys house, sounded like whining. I spoke to him and he didn't appear, so I removed the plastic top half of his mini duna. Normally when I do this, he sticks his head out of his nest, sniffs my hand and then relaxes and climbs into it, or mucks about, but he has always been fine with being disturbed.
This time, he came out of his nest, ears back, teath "bared" (mouth open, ready to attack) and proceeded to make a loud intermittent clacking sound with his teeth, a very clear warning indeed! After a few minutes I gave up trying to calm him, gave him a rodent marble, and let him get back to his nest. I'll listen out. I am thinking he is ok though - he hasn't made any funny noises other than that.
I hope he is, anyway!! x
