Default My hamster is avoiding me and I can't get him to come out.

Hi everyone, I'm new and this is my first time taking care of a hamster. I have tried to tame him before, although without success. He constantly avoids me and refuses to come out if I am awake. I have stayed up past 1:00 in the morning waiting for him to come out, but he doesn't because I am awake. He constantly shakes when I would hold him, so I have been instead trying to simply get him to eat out of my hand daily, he instead refuses the food and quickly moves away from me. I have heard the term ghost hamster used vefore, and I think this is what people mean. He has recently turned one year old and still behaves this way. Some days the only way I can tell he is still in the cage is when the food amount goes down. I would appreciate some advice since I don't know what to try anymore.
