Unhappy New Roborovski's figting

Hi everyone,

I have done lots of research after losing my syrian Little Bear, and I have decided that I would get two robos rather than another syrian. I know buying from pet stores is not ideal but my thought process is, if I can save them from a life in the tiny pet store cages or being sold to a family with young children that just simply want a pet without investing in the proper housing, then I am happy to do that. I went to pick them up yesterday but after buying them, the woman at the pet store told me that one is 6 months old and one is 2 months old (so clearly not from the same litter). I had my doubts but decided I would see how they interact as they have been in the same cage in the pet store for however long. They were not getting along at all and spent a lot of their time between exploring their new cage, getting mad at each other, hissing, hitting, etc. I know they were likely fighting in the pet store as well but since the pet store closes at 8:00pm before they wake up, they workers did not notice that they didn't get along.

I do not have enough room to separate them, I don't want them to live together if it causes them stress (or potentially one could get hurt), and I don't want to bring them back to the pet store if they will just be put back into a cage together again. What should I do?

This combination isn't going to work out especially with that age gap. Buying from a pet store only encourages them to get in more stock. Take one back and keep the other as a singleton if you don't have the space to possibly separate if they fight.
Two same sex hamsters will not stay together at maturity unless they are siblings and never separated or handled individually. It's not a natural situation.
Like I say return one. Robos are quite hand to handle and tame from pet stores so I'd tend to keep the young one.
Put one in a plastic storage box for now as you don't want a fight where one can be killed or hurt then you have a vet bill too!

I agree with the above, I got 2 robos from a pet store who were from the same litter and seemed like best friends, so I kept them together. they were always snuggling and being adorable with each other. fast forward 6 months and I wake up to a shrieking sound and run over to the cage to see them fighting with each other. I immediately separated them and luckily neither of them had gotten hurt yet. I know of many stories like this and unfortunately robo hamsters almost always need to be separated eventually. both of them never really got tame and I like to call them my hamsters for show because they really can't be handled. If you want a pet you can handle, I would say return them both and get a different breed. If you don't mind risking not being able to tame them, I agree with souffle to return the older one and try your luck with the younger one but keep in mind that its very possible you'll never be able to tame it to the point where it will let you touch it or pick it up. there are some people who are able to tame their robos but its rare, especially for pet store hamsters.
good luck!
