Default Hamster not happy! Help please

Hi! This is my first post in this forum and i could really do with some help from some more knowledge hammy lovers!

I work in a pet store and recently fell in love with one of our hamsters and bought her home. But she’s giving me very mixed signals at the moment. She is a female syrian and is already around a year old.

She was previously bought by a family and seemed to be getting on well until they brought two new kitten into the picture and she apparently started biting them, so they returned her and she stayed at the pet store for a little while again before i took her. So i know she used to the ridiculously small glass cages that we have for them at the pet store (id make them bigger if i could ) as well a mid sized plastic ones she stayed in during her time before being on the shop floor.

She’s got a pretty decent sized cage, but i definitely am planning on getting even bigger after this, lots of bedding, toys and enrichment yet all she wants to do is get out, biting the edges of the cage as well as the bars. I am constantly getting her out when she is awake and i even got her a large play pen yet she even tries to escape that- when i let her out of it once she ran straight to the door of the room her cage is in. I aslo tried a ball but she just bites at that too.

Please tell me if there is anything i can do! i know her reasoning for wanting to leave the cage may be because it’s too small for her, but she’s lived in far smaller at the store and made no escape attempts there. I’ve only had her for a few days so she might still be settling in but please let me know if you think there’s any reasons for this or anything i can do!

Was there an improvement in the hammy's condition in these last couple of months? Did you move her to the bigger cage?

The thing that I would have suggested is that maybe rather than the size of the cage, the hammy was unhappy with something else in the setup? Maybe a smell, or ultrasonic noise source, or problem with the change of food or bedding type, or not enough places to hide and feel safe, etc.
