I think she thought we were gone for good...
so I went on a 5 day vacation and left my hamsters more than enough food and water to get them through. (honestly that might be one of my favorite things about hamsters- you never need to portion their food or get worried that they'll finish it in one go! I used to have guinea pigs and going on a vacation was so stressful cuz I really had to get someone to watch them!!!)
anyways, I had someone come in to check their water bottles werent leaking and everything was running smoothly, and when I came back, everything was exactly how I left it and each hamster still had more than enough food and water left.
BUT my Syrian girl Daisy is an extremely bright hamster and realized I wasnt home. my friend only came during the day when she was sleeping, and poor Daisy thought she was totally abandoned! Daisy lives in my room so we have an expecially tight bond and she's used so seeing me around a lot, and she spends a lot of time each night out of her cage with me.
so I'm pretty sure her survival instincts kicked in because when I came back, her cheeks were more stuffed than I've ever seen her entire life! she often stuffs her cheeks, but this was MUCH more than usual. I didnt even know so much food can fit in there! she had over 5 days worth of food in her cheek pouches!
it was quite a sight to see, and after we all had a good laugh, I refilled her food bowl and she went to go empty out her cheek pouches, i'm assuming because she realized she isnt going to starve after all.
