Default Stressed Syrian Hamster?

Hey fellow hamster owners! I’m in desperate need of figuring out what is causing my female Syrian, Taffy, to stress. This is my first ever hamster, but I have done lots of research prior to getting her, about 4 months ago. Taffy’s enclosure just about meets cage requirements, she has a 12 inch wheel, a sand bath and multiple hideouts as well as for toys. She’s built a pretty good bond with me, since she allows me to now handle her without getting frightened. Taffy recently started to find new ways to reach the top of her lid and start chewing it. She gives multiple signs of stress like constantly going into corners and trying to get her way out. I don’t know whether she’s very cage size picky, she needs more textures, toys, or just has another issue. So in conclusion, what do you guys think could be causing her stress and want to escape? Taffy and I appreciate all the help we can get!

Hello and welcome to HC!

How much out of cage time do you give Taffy?

I have a high energy, male Syrian who needs at least 1.5 hrs of out of cage time otherwise he'll constantly pace around his cage demanding to get let out. Once he's had a good, long run around, he's calmer and will go on his wheel.

Some female Syrians need a habitat bigger than the recommended 100cmx50cm.

You could make a raised lid so she can't reach it.

Thank you so much! I’ll be sure to use your advice. I normally only let Taffy out about 4 times a week for 30 minutes, I’ll starting doing it daily though. Do you think adding another level to match the size of the unbroken space could help satisfy her a bit more?

Levels can be helpful because it would give Taffy another place to go as long as it's not too high and creating fall risks.
Could you post a photo of Taffy's set up so people could have a look and maybe come up with suggestions?

Hello. Some Syrians can be highly active and need a lot of space. But one thing that can cause cage stress is cleaning out too much or changing things around or just something not quite working for her with the set up. Could you post a photo of the set up and we might be able to offer some tips?! How much depth of substrate does she have? Is one of the hides big enough to create a nesting box that's dark inside? They do need somewhere dark to retreat to, to settle in a cage - either in a large dark house/hide, or deep enough substrate to dig down under.
