Default Hamster tries to escape

The moment I open up my hamster’s cage she sprints over to the door and starts trying to escape by running up my arms before I can stop her. This has been happening for 3 days now and she seems less interested in the things in her cage. She also seems very hyper all the time. She is a 12 week old syrian. If anyone has any ideas of why she’s suddenly started doing this and how to stop it I would be very grateful.

Hi and welcome to HC!

It sounds like she has a lot of built up energy she needs to release or maybe she's trying to tell you something.

Does she have a 28cm wheel that spins freely? It is very important for a Syrian to have a big enough wheel to burn off energy and to run comfortably with a straight back.
Is her water bottle working ok?
Is her cage big enough with plenty to do?
Does she get enough out of cage time?

I have come across this type of behaviour once with a foster hamster who didn't know how to use a wheel because he hadn't had one before. Once he started to run on his wheel he calmed right down.

It may just be that she is comfortable with you now, they can be slow and jumpy at first and then become more active when they gain confidence. Just to check though does she have a 28cm wheel and is it rotating okay? Just when I first got mine she had been in a tiny wheel and when I first had her she would be awake for twelve hours. Once getting the bigger wheel she completely calmed down.

If the wheel is working okay then you may just have a very energetic hamster! Make sure she has plenty of bedding and space in her cage to run around to expel energy. Also when taking her out make sure there is plenty of enrichment there too.
