Post Is she just lazy?

Hey everyone, so I've had my hamster for a few weeks now and she seems pretty happy which is great!

The only thing that is confusing me right now is that for the first while she'd wake up around 10 pm, then it moved to 11 or 12 pm...

But now she doesn't come out till 2:30 at the earliest!!

I don't get to see her much even with my night shifts and going to bed at 2 am, and being a hamster she likes to chill in her burrow all day. Is she just a lazy butt that likes to come out late for a few hours or is this abnormal?

Hi, some more experienced owners should answer soon but honestly I think sometimes this is just their differences in personality. My previous hamster was very calm and my current one is very scatty.

I know you say you work night shifts so not sure what time you come home to sleep, but some hamsters can go to bed late but you’ll still see them up early morning so you could handle her then instead maybe. It could just be that she’s relaxed, I got my current hamster on preloved and she was in a tiny cage with a tiny wheel. When I first got her she got up at 7pm and would still be up at 7am! But then it started to get later I think she just needed to get her excitement out. She now comes out around 9pm goes back to sleep at 11pm and around 2am she’ll get back up while we’re all asleep.

If you feel this behaviour is unusual, just when you next do see her, check her fur eyes, nose and bum, look for wet patches missing fur or bumps, check her home make sure nothing is hidden. Make sure she drinking and got food, as well as pooing and peeing normally. I wouldn’t particularly say it’s cause for concern but if you think it might be a sign she is ill in some way don’t hesitate to take her to the vets.

What species is she? Dwarf or Syrian?
Could you possibly post a photo of her set up?

This behaviour wouldn't be unusual for Roborovski hamsters who often wait until it's quiet and dark to come out to go about their hamster business.
Behaviours can change though as time goes on or something catches their interest like out of cage time for example.

Syrian hamsters usually sleep in large houses and many of them can be tempted out with a treat.

I have one hamster, a dwarf, who has always been a recluse so their behaviour can depend a lot on their personalities as well.

She's a Syrian, I don't know her exact age as I got her from a pet store but I don't think she's older than a few months at most.

For the other person that said check her eyes and such, when I do see her she seems healthy, fur looks good, no wet spots or missing fur, and she grooms and runs on her wheel etc.

I guess maybe she just comes out really late?
