Default Lola Stays With Me At Night

I swear. I sleep on the couch and she stays under the blanket right by my legs. During the night I can feel her sniffing me or crawling on me but she never gets off the couch. Ever. I mean is it ok for a hamster to be out of its cage all night like that? I really lucked out though with how tamed she is. Or she’s just a scaredy cat.

There’s only one other thing that worries me. I put some of her food on the couch but she doesn’t have access to her water bottle. Can she go the night without water? Or do I put water in a bowl? She eats ok but I notice she doesn’t drink water every day

Personally, i don't think its a good idea to keep a hamster on a couch all night which must be very boring for her.

Hamsters are at their most active at night and want to forage for food, run on their wheels and do what hamsters do.
When does Lola do all that? During the day?

I'm surprised that you are even comfortable with that. I'd be worried that she'd fall or jump off the couch when i'm asleep and run off somewhere never to be seen again.

I think that hamsters should have access to water at all times.

I don't think I would keep her out on the couch all night either. I've found that sometimes hamsters and other small animals will stay in just one area outside the cage when they're scared or bored, not necessarily because they like being there. A happy hamster usually wants to explore everything. I'm sure she would prefer to be in her cage most of the night, as long as she has a comfortable wheel and plenty to do.

Ps. It’s not every night. And she’s been back in her cage for awhile. Maybe this will sound selfish of me but I’ve been sick these past few days and I guess having her with me made me feel better. I never thought of her being bored. I just thought she was a well behaved tamed scaredy cat hamster. I didn’t get the sense she was bored. She loved crawling underneath my blanket all night.

I can relate to this. Back in 2009 I was bedbound and had just been diagnosed with a bowel disease. There was a pets at home beside the hospital and I was impulsive and brought home a hamster. Indy. My first "adult" hamster.

I was often awake at night and Indy would sit on my shoulder or just snuggle up beside me, I made him like a "bed box" where he'd climb in and just let me hold my hand around him. He would go for a wander over the bed and usually was quite careful and didn't plop off the edge!

However, whenever I felt myself getting sleepy I'd always put him back in his cage..for water, food and safety.

Could you move her cage near your bed/sofa, that way you can talk and watch her knowing she is safe
