Post How can i get my new hamster to trust me?

Hello Everyone, On Friday evening I adopted a cute little dwarf hamster. He is two months old and I have let him settle in his huge cage for 3 days now. He came out yesterday to say hello to me, he sat and watched me for 20 minutes. He was showing me his belly in the bathing sand. It was going well until today, I made a small move to start getting him to trust me. I put some carrot into my hand and put my hand flat next to him in the cage. I tried everything including, rubbing his bedding on my hand, different foods, but he just seems frightened of me.

What can I do in terms of getting him to trust me? He is a roboroviski dwarf hammy, so I know they require a lot of patience and time.

Any advice?

Some robos really don't like human interaction. Some consider them a watch and don't touch hamster. That doesn't mean that you can't try. My friendliest and cuddliest hamster has been a robo!

Best thing is don't rush. Find something he really likes, mine was a sucker for pumpkin seeds (out of shell). Place your hand flat, wait a bit. If he doesn't come to you. Just take the food and leave it where your hand was. Repeat. Eventually he'll associate you with food.

Another thing is to keep some tissue in your pockets. Keep it in there all day. Your scent will transfer onto the tissue. Put this in the cage. If it gets peed on or gets gross in general replace with a fresh piece that has your scent on it.

Congrats on your little guy but the way. Can't wait to se photos of him

Thats where you went wrong. You put ur hand towards him and in his cage! Until he trusts you and is happy to be on you, you must let him come to you, any interaction and taming must be on his terms. Dont approach him with your hand from now on, open the cage door and place ur hand there sideways along the length of the door and use a bit of chicken or boiled egg something different yummy. Dont give him that particular treat any other time but when your trying to tame him. Be patient and let him come to you and clime on ur hand,. The first time he does dont move or try to carry him let him take his treat and go back in the cage like he will then shut the cage do that for 2 days or until he climbs on ur hand for the first time. On the 3rd + 4th day let him come on your hand but twice doing the same thing then shut the cage. On the 5th/6th/7th day use both hands and place them in the same position one in front of the other and place the treat on ur second hand so he has to walk across one hand to get his treat on the other, again dont move and let him go back in. Do exactly the same pattern as you did when u used just one hand. After a couple of weeks he will start to be relaxed and happy to climb on your hands and will see you and your hands as a good thing. When he starts either eating his treat on ur hands or showing no hesitation and climbs straight out on ur hand without a second thought thats when hes starting to trust you. If he starts investigating beyond ur hands and wanting to go up ur arm let him but stay by his cage and make sure ur arm and hand stays in the same position so he can go straight back in if he feels unsure. After a few weeks he should want to stay on you probably on ur shoulder. When hes happy to do that and stays there not bothered about going back to his cage then slowly and gradually start moving away from his cage. Do it this way he will trust u completely!
Remember Hamsters are pray animals they need to feel safe and no that you will let or put them back in there safe place (there cage).
