hamster lying flat and still in sand bath
Hi, my hamster Aster is a Russian dwarf of unknown age as she's adopted but is estimated to be 8months-a bit over a year. today and last night she has been acting strange and has been lying down completely flat in her sand bath which is something she has never done before.
I'm wondering if it could be a way to cope with the heatwave we have in the Uk at the moment but I am also worried she could be unwell. I have a cold plate in for her but she doesn't seem interested in lying on it, should i be worried or just try to keep her cool and does anyone have any other good methods of keeping her cool? thanks.

Re: hamster lying flat and still in sand bath
Hello and welcome to HC!
I don't think its anything to worry about. Our Robo was lying flat yesterday, halfway in his sandbath and the rest of him on a flat stone in front of the sandbath. I keep some flat stones in the fridge and swap them over.
Probably to do with the heat.
I had a foster dwarf i called Pancake because he had this habit of going flat and wrapped himself around my wrist in a bracelet kind of fashion. Then he'd look around and go into normal hamster shape.
As long as Aster is otherwise behaving normally i wouldn't worry. They don't eat so much dry food in this weather either but enjoy their fresh food even more.

Re: hamster lying flat and still in sand bath
Hello
It certainly sounds like the heat is getting to them, and while that is normal behaviour to "pancake" and sand is cool, do keep a careful watch for signs of heat stroke.
Can you move the cage to the coolest room, keep curtains shut in the day and windows open at night.
Offer cold cucumber and frozen veggies. There are many threads with helpful tips. Hopefully just one more day and we'll have some relief!

unfortunately she is in a detolf so not very portable! it seems to be cooling down weather wise now anyways and shes been acting normal besides that. I've brought in a fan which is helping to keep her cool. I'll make sure to buy some cucumber though to feed to both my hamsters as the rooms are still quite warm
