Question hamster chewing on metal wheel stand

my boy has randomly started to chew on the metal stand his wheel is attached to, and idk why. he has 5 other chew toys with various materials (including a whimzee) and almost all of his other toys are wood/cardboard, and his wheel works fine so he isn't trying to tell me something's wrong with it. I'm assuming that chewing on this stand is bad for his teeth as it's metal, so any ideas on how to get him to stop? I haven't let him out of his cage for a few weeks as he's been a bit ill with a minor upper respiratory infection and I wanted to avoid any potential stress which could make his breathing worse, so it might be caused by that? lmk what yall think and what I can do to stop him :)

Not to let him out of his cage for a few weeks providing he enjoys out of cage time would probably stress him and he may well show it by chewing metal.

Some of my hamsters would go crazy if i wouldn't let them out for a few days, nevermind weeks.

Why do you think out of cage time would stress him? You can always put him back if he's not happy. Do you think that he is not well enough for it?

Maybe you could put him in a playpen to see how he likes it.

Yes he could be doing it to try and tell you something. I don't think there's any harm in letting him out in a controlled environment. ie not free roaming but maybe in a playpen area. Sometimes its hard to work out what they're trying to tell you so its a process of elimination. It might be the need for out of cage time. If that doesnt stop it then check everything else in the cage - is everything accessible? Is the water bottle working? It does sound a bit like pent up energy and frustration but it might be more serious - eg water bottle not letting water out properly.
