Default Wow Something Spooked Lola Tonight

I bought her a playpen. I put her in it and she freaked out. Didn’t like it at all. She kept nervously chewing on the bars. I put her on my bed which she normally likes but this time she just stayed in a corner. Just staring. At one point she even turned her back towards me. She even nipped my finger and she hasn’t done that in quite awhile. I would try to gently stroke her and she would flinch. Finally she let me stroke her for I would say at least 10-20 minutes without her moving. I think between the thunder and the rain we had and her playpen she’s a scared spooked our hamster tonight.

That can happen. Hamsters sometimes get spooked by things we're not even aware of.

I would have put her back to the safety and familiarity of her cage rightaway and then let her be for a couple of days, only feeding and talking to her.

As for playpens. None of my hamsters ever liked them but a lot of hamsters do. It's important to but a wheel in and things with their scent on plus some new toys. Hides like a cardboard box etc so they don't feel exposed and can run for cover if needed.

Lola will get over it so don't worry too much.

Same thing happened with Bella 3 nights ago. It had been real hot for days so my balcony door was open, it started to thunder and lighting and when I went in to see her she was shaking and stock still. I shut the door put her classical music back on, sat with her for 10mins and she was fine. I defiantly wouldn't of got her out that night and defiantly wouldn't of tried anything new with her that night.
You can only learn from your mistakes and learn more about your Hamster. Remember Hamsters are prey animals they need to feel safe and secure which is in there home in a situation like that. Its the same for fireworks night, leave them alone, put some classical music on and just keep checking on them.
