Default I think my hamster wants to escape?!?

Hi! I’ve had my hamster at my house for just over 2 months now. She seemed shy at first but eventually let us stroke her and after a few weeks she started to climb onto our palms to eat a treat. She never has and still won’t let us pick her up, I got close once where she met me cup her body kind of until I moved and then she stepped out but didn’t seemed spooked. This last week and a half she has started to chew her cages in the corners, I found a little bit of blood in her wheel and tube & after cleaning it a week ago I’ve seen nothing since. I have googled and some say teething and some say she wants to escape & everytime I put my hand on recently she runs at me & im convinced she is benign territorial, I don’t know what to do, I let her out in her ball most days for no longer then like 15 minutes so I’m just really lost now. Tonight she has started biting her tube which I haven’t noticed her do yet.

Hello and welcome to HC!

What species of hamster do you have?

Finding blood is something that should always be investigated because she could be ill and in pain which could cause her to bite.

If you can't pick her up for a health check not even with gloves on then i would put a treat in a glass jar to let her walk in and check her that way.

I would definitely stop putting her in a hamster ball to let her roll around in. Hamster balls are dangerous and cause stress to a hamster. You could use it to get her out of her cage and then let her play in a playpen or safe area with lots of floor toys like plastic tubes and cardboard boxes to explore.
If you can sit in there with her it would be a good way for her to get used to you. I always do taming session out of the cage including pick up exercises.

Have you done the regular checks like wheel and waterbottle working ok? Just to rule out that she is not trying to tell you something.

Hello,

Everything that Ria said is important. I would also add: can you show us / describe your set up as it may be what is inadequate? (sorry I am not trying to be rude, just direct).

Also if your female is Syrian (which I suspect), she will need a very large cage (100 x 50 cm), and also to free roam or play in playpen (no ball), ideally every night between 30-60 minutes.

I would book a vet appointment to check where the blood is coming from, to make sure you're not missing out on something causing her to be in pain, and stressed. Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi! She is a Syrian hamster, when we got her it was from a pet store and bought everything the guy recommended, even the bigger ball so she wouldn’t hurt her back in it. We only really put her into the ball when we clean her out mostly, sometimes like an extra day a week too. When we found blood it was on the wheel in her cage, but there was nothing in the bedding or anywhere else. Yeh we do weekly proper cleans & every 2 days we empty bits of poo and things
Hope this answers your questions!

Don’t worry I didn’t presume you was rude, the cage is the biggest one pets at home offers & the ones the worker told us to get. I think I’ve attached a picture! And she is a female Syrian, she has a large cage, and was told to get her a ball from the pet shop & they didn’t mention a pen, how come she shouldn’t go in balls, I wasn’t aware it would hurt them! I will look into getting a play pen & book an appointment

My male syrian will let me pick him up, but it has to be done as you say by cupping it in your hands, but he has never came to my hands. He'll stand still so that I can pick him up, but he has never jumped into my hand. He'll eat of it, put his paws?? on it(cuteness overload) but I think he tolerates me. Now my husband, who thinks he's just a spoilt thing in a cage, Pebbles loves him. He watches him, he looks at his sofa lovingly even if he's not there. I feel used!
