Default Can you train a hamster to sleep on you?

Is it possible to train a hamster to sleep on you?

I always see videos on Instagram of hamsters sleeping on their owners, whether it just be on their lap or in some sort of sleeping bag.

I know every hamster is different and neither of the two that I've had have relaxed enough to sleep on me, but I'm wondering if there's anything I can specifically do to help lull them to sleep when not in their cage.

I don't think so. I think its down to the nature of the hamster and sadly some people disturbing their hamsters when they were probably fast asleep in their hides.

When I was younger my hamsters slept in my dressing gown pocket, but they were also awake when I got home from school, I have no recollection but I probably woke them up to play with when they were tired (as I didnt know better) and I guess this still goes on today.

Some of it is the nature of the hamster. But the key is to a very very tame hamster who is really bonded with you. But even then it has to be a dopey time for the hamster! Our first hamster regularly went to sleep on my knee but only if he was under a blanket and if it was between 8pm and 9pm (when he liked to nap) before or after that time he was off and very active and wanting to jump off the sofa and explore.

I also had a little donut bed he liked curling up in. So he'd curl up in that on the sofa, I'd lift it onto my knee. He would only stay in it if I then put a blanket over the top.

Focus on hand taming - bathtub taming - until they are easily picked up without wriggling and don't try and run away.

It was this one. Only for out of cage use really as if they chew it,it has stuffing inside that could block their pouches or gut.

I also had a fleece blanket that was for the hamster - so had his smell on it.

Three different hamsters liked it. But they have to be in the mood! And feel safe and relaxed. So as well as taming you need to keep their trust. Don't mess with their nest and hoard and if you do, do it very very respectfully

It's strictly a trust thing. It shows how comfortable they are in their surroundings. Some are relatively chill, some aren't. I think I've only had 1 sleep on me and that's my Syrian Lilith. (Unfortunately she woke up as I picked up my phone).

I don't think it's possible to train a hamster to sleep on you and what for?

Don't believe everything you see on youtube. Who knows how long it took to make those videos and how often the hamster's sleep was disturbed to get an exhausted hamster falling asleep on a human. Some videos may be genuine but others may be staged at the cost of the poor little hamster.

If a hamster wants to go to sleep on their human it may do so and some are extremely tame and friendly.
I have a dwarf who likes to sleep in my left shoe. She often wants out of her cage and most times runs around but at other times she heads straight for my shoe, climbs in and goes to sleep.

Aw, thanks. I'll give this a shot.

My current hamster is hand tamed and will ride around on my shoulder without trying to get away.

My last hamster used to sleep in my pocket if it was wearing basketball shorts or in the pouch in the front if I was wearing a hoody.

My current Syrian hamster George has been an incredibly laid back boy almost from when I brought him home. I got him from the RSPCA and he was very scared the first few days but he soon settled down and nearly every time I get him out of the cage now he will curl up for a doze. He's never gone to sleep actually on me but if I lie propped up against pillows on the bed he will either climb up to the pillow behind my head or curl up next to my leg if I make a little cave out of a blanket. He will then doze for 2 hours no problem while I read, he'd probably doze even longer but I usually put him back in case he's needing a wee by then! It's so sweet to see him curled up and relaxed for so long. He is an old hamster now, if the RSPCA got his age right he was 2 when I got him which makes him 3.5 years now. So it's understandable he wants to sleep, but he's done this from pretty much a month after I brought him home. I only get him out when he's already up and usually running in his wheel, so it's not like I drag him out of his nest half asleep already. I just take it as a sign that he feels safe and relaxed enough to do this which is really nice to know. I think it's just down to the individual hamster, but I've been lucky enough to own 3 who will settle like this (all male Syrians), the rest have been hyper!

Yes, like everyone is saying, it depends on the hamster. My hamster sleeps in my bathrobe, but not all the time, only when she feels like it. Sometimes she is too active. My bathrobe is fluffy, so my hamster is comfortable. I also give her treats sometimes in there, so that makes her happier.

I haven't personally come across any specific training techniques for hamsters to sleep on their owners, but you could try looking for case studies or experiences shared by other hamster owners online. They might have some helpful tips or tricks that could work for you.
