Re: Multiple hamsters, different behaviour
They can actually smell eachother even if they are not in the same cage so yes, behavior might change for a while untill they figur out that the other hamster cannot reach them

Re: Multiple hamsters, different behaviour
They will definitely be able to smell each other, and they may be a bit on edge until they realise they are safe in their enclosure. But I don't think there'd necessarily be any significant changes in behaviour. The only thing I can think of is they may scent mark more? I haven't had more than one hamster at a time so I'm interested whether anything in their behaviour would change!

Re: Multiple hamsters, different behaviour
It's great to hear you have or are thinking about expanding your hamster family. I wouldn't worry too much about slight changes in their behavior. This is more than likely due to the fact that they can smell each other even though they may not be in the same cage. Hopefully they will settle down quickly.

Re: Multiple hamsters, different behaviour
I've got 14 hamsters and at the moment 13 of them are living in the same room. On a whole, I don't notice any changes in behaviour as they seem to get used to the scents and presence of others but do find that bringing in a new hamster or the death of one of the existing hamsters may affect their behaviour for a day or so.
