Default More active in smaller cage,why?

Our dwarf hamster are more active at the day when he lives in smaller cages then when he lives in larger cage. Why?

It could be a sign of stress, they tend to run around frantically when they are stressed in smaller enclosures. It could also relate to the wheel size, if you have a smaller one in the small cage it may not work for the hamster and be painful to run on, so it has more energy to run around the cage instead.
