Default New hamster won't stop screaming

Last friday i got a new syrian hamster. It's the second hamster i've ever owned, and over the past few days i've realised that my first hamster has not made me any wiser on how to tame this new one it is very very scared, from the first time i got it, it has been screeching like crazy. Over the weekend i let it stay in the cage with as few interruptions as possible, but even if it heard me be near the cage or speak, it would start screeching again. I have managed to feed it from my palm and it has let me pet it once, but only when it is distracted, the moment it realises whats happening, it'll turn onto its belly and scream.
I've been looking for advice on different pages but no other experience i've read about sounds as extreme as this one so i figured the best thing would be to ask personally.

The hamster was bought from a pet store and i think it's a female(i havent been able to get close enough to see properly?). It does eat, but not very much, and it does drink water. It does not sleep all through the day and will change places between a small nest its made with toiletpaper and then it will climb up the bars behind its wheel and sleep squeezed between there.

What would be the best way for me to tame this hamster and make it realise i'm not a threat?

Hey! I would say to leave the hamster alone for a week. Don’t try and feed her, pet her, or anything. You can even cover the cage with a blanket or towel to provide privacy.

Only go into the cage to clean the water and change food - and I would recommend doing that in the middle of the day when the hamster is fast asleep. Then you can start taming over! Some hamsters just take a longer time to get settled in, and if you give her her space and time to figure out her new home, she should be easier to work with.

I’m also curious about your cage size. You mention having bars, and in the United States I do not know of any enclosures that are barred and the appropriate amount of space for a hamster. This could be contributing to her stress as well - if she doesn’t have enough space. This is just another aspect to consider!

Hmm alright i will try that. My interactions with her have been minimal but bc she tends to not sleep through the day(she switches between sleeping in a tiny burrow she made and then wedged behind her wheel) she sees me around the cage quite a lot(the cage is on my bedroom floor).

Her cage is a modified rabbit or guinea pig cage. The options for hamster cages here arent very good, theyre all super small, so we added mesh to a much bigger cage. The size is about 118cm x 62cm.
