Default Syrian hamster Freezing

My syrian that i’ve had for a week is very scared and every time I walk into the room he freezes and stays there for a few minutes . Is there any way to help this? He also doesn’t like when the lights are on in the room and i’m in there he just goes back to bed. Should I just let him get used to this or turn off the lights more?

I would let him get used to it, if you keep turning the lights off he won't get a chance to adjust, when he freezes just talk to him quietly for a few moments, if he runs off maybe leave a small treat for him then walk away for a while so he can begin to associate you with good things!
